New here and a couple questions

Hi all!  I just got engaged and we are planning a Fall 2011 wedding.  I have a couple of questions to those further along than me and mostly to those who just got married.

Have any of you heard of or used The Cake Guys?  Sounds like they have a pretty neat package deal, but you know how some things sound too good to be true sometimes!  :)

Also, have any of you done an event at the Grand Hotel in McKinney?  It is beautiful and we also want to see if that is too good to be true!

Lastly, any suggestions for a good makeup person would be great.

Thanks!
Maryanne

I think Stephiehall used the Cake Guys and she had a pretty good experience with them if I remember correctly.  Stephie also had a great make up artist and so did Tiffany--it might have been the same one.  They'll chime in I'm sure once it gets a little later!

    Congratulations!

Congratulations and welcome to the boards!

I went to a wedding where the Cake Guys were used.  It was very good!

    Congrats and Welcome!!

I used The Cake Guys Sweet Inspiration packages and they were gorgeous and delicious.   We couldn't have asked for a better deal.

We almost booked our wedding for the Grand Hotel.  It is awesome.  We wanted to do our ceremony and reception in the same place though, and I didn't like the setup/ room-flipping options they had.  We went with El Dorado Country Club instead.

My makeup artist was Amanda with AH Makeup Artistry.  She was fantastic.

    Hope that helps!

I had the same issue as Tiffany.  We almost booked the Grand Ballroom at the Grand Hotel... I loved it.  I'm a sucker for historic architecture.  :)

The flipping the room thing wasn't up my ally though.  Have you thought about looking at the MPAC (McKinney Performing Arts Center) across the street.  It's the old courthouse.  They have several awesome locations within the building.  You could hold the ceremony in one location and the reception in another... and they are super cheap to boot and you can bring in outside catering/alcohol.

Another idea if you are just sold on the Grand Hotel... have your reception there and your ceremony at the MPAC building.

    Good Luck!

From what I understand of the Grand, you have the ceremony and reception in the same room and go downstairs for cocktails while they flip.  I haven't had our meeting with them yet to know exactly.  Did you guys not want to go downstairs?  We just love how it looks inside!

We are also considering the Courtyard by Marriott in Allen on Stacy & 75.

I will look into the MPAC!  Thanks!!

This was over a year ago, so I can't remember exactly, but we had a pretty large group to herd around during the flip.    It seems like there was a considerable extra cost associated with the cocktail hour too, but I can't remember.

Our wedding hotel was that Courtyard on Stacy and 75.  I didn't ever see their banquet facilities, but the hotel itself was nice.

EDIT: Found the info.   As of last year (may be different now) it was $250 plus $10/per person to do the room flip and serve cocktails and hors'douvres.  That is perfectly reasonable, but combined with the pricey menu choices (delicious and totally worth it) it was just over budget for us.

I used the Cake Guys (custom cake--they didn't offer the SI package when I ordered mine :() and my wedding cake was delicious and beautiful--but it was a little skimpy on the fillings and I was just a teensy bit disappointed.  The cake I had at the tasting and at my Meet the Parents dinner (they let me have some of their samples for free to serve at my dinner) was over the top delicious.  I have never heard of anyone else on the board that has used them complain about this however.

I LOVED my MUA Kristin Colaneri.  I think she has a minimum of 6 services (hair and makeup) for a Saturday wedding however.
