Moms and Maids

When do you buy bridesmaid dresses?

My wedding is in September of 2012 and I'm buying my dress in September of 2011.  Should I have my bridesmaids get their dresses when I get mine or are you suppose to wait to get thier dresses until later?

Wait as long as possible, definitely no earlier than 9 months out, preferably around 4-6 depending on how long the designer takes to come in.
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284

Yeah, I did 6 months for my BMs. Their dresses are supposed to be in by late May, even though my wedding's not still Sept, but FI's cousin did hers at the 6 month mark as well, and thank GOD, because all of the dresses came in wrong and they had to re-order them... and had plenty of time to do so since she had done it early! That freaked me out, so we just ordered ours =)

My wedding is July 30.  My MOH ordered her dress last month, and one of the BMs ordered hers this past weekend (the cutoff for non-rush orders).  The third BM is due to have a baby tomorrow (YAY!!), so she can wait up to three weeks, and it'll be a rush order.

Definitely wait a while. People's bodies change, and while you might be ok paying for alterations buying a year in advance, your BMs might not be. We ordered ours 6 mo in advance because of shipping time at our particular boutique. It all depends on your store, but I'd say that pps are right on with 4-6 mo.

My wedding is July 30th and my girls ordered their dresses a couple weeks ago.  The dress shop owner told them it was a great time to order becuase it can take up to 12 weeks for the dress to come in and if they need any alterations, it will take even more time.

My maids ordered their dresses in Feb for a June wedding.

Some take longer depending on the designer and turn around time.

A year out in too early!  I've been in 18 weddings (my own included) and have never ordered a BM dress more than 4 months out (and that was a Vera Wang, so it was a longer turn-around time).  People gain/lose weight, get pregnant, opt-out, etc... Plus, your style and preferences may change as you continue with your planning.  There's no rush!  Plus, if you start too soon, your BMs will be a littke over-weddinged by the time your big day comes.
