Getting Makeup done at the mall-- advice?

Has anyone thought of getting their makeup done at the mall on their wedding day? I don't have anyone to do my makeup, or have the talent to do my own, so i was considering going for a makeover at sephora. Is this risky or do you think they would do a good job? any advice?

  • I would be clear with them that this is for your wedding, make an appointment, and be prepared to spend a certain amount on products or offer to pay. I'd treat this like any other makeup artist - don't take advantage of the fact that sephora offers makeup applications and expect to pay nothing.

Keep in mind though, that not all sephora employees are cosmetologists. You might be having someone do your makeup who is just as skilled as your are.

Thanks. Sephora offers a makeover with purchase of 50 dollar gift card to their store, and only by appointment.  I'd be buying the foundation and lipstick for touch ups anyway, so it would be a good deal for me. I would mostly be worried about getting someone unskilled!!
  • I might try a department store that has a MAC counter or, maybe, Bobbi Brown.  The men and women who work at those counters in a department store usually have a significant amount of makeup application training.

Whatever store you choose, I'd suggest you go in a couple of months before the wedding with plenty of time to see them apply makeup on other people -- or choose someone whose makeup you like.  Let them know you'd like a trial run before the wedding.  Take it from there.  Good luck!
  • Definately agree to look at Bobbi Brown or similar.  Sephora people are cashiers with very little training.

My biggest concern would be time.  Do you have your day-of timeline planned yet?  I know I don't have time to go to the mall, have my makeup applied then get the sales pitch, then do everything else I need to do that day.  Make up counter makeovers can be slow as molasses.  Not to mention - what if you hate it?  Then you're back to square 1 without a back up plan.

    I wouldn't risk it, honestly.
  • Do I think it's the best route to go?  No.  But lots of girls do and it turns out just fine.  I do agree with the PP that I would go with MAC over Sephora.

  • I took my dtr for a make over at sephora for her bday and they did mine as well. I told them what I wanted and I hated it! Def get a trial done. I tried to go to the MAC counter but the MUA was only in at certain t

  • Thanks for the advice guys, I really appreciate it. I will forget sephora and look into MAC to see if thats a possibility and if they are willing to do a trial. I'm having an evening wedding so time shouldn't be an issue for me!
  • I had a great experience at Sephora! The girl that did mine was definitely a MUA, not just a cashier. I liked that we had multiple brands to pick and choose from. I got the makeup done as a 'trial' for my engagement pics (knowing that I could go home and wash it off and do my own if it was that awful) and I loved it! I will be going back for my wedding day!
  • I went to MAC today for a consultation and I absolutely loved it! I had called earlier to see if they were willing to do one, and she said they could test out colors but not do my whole face unless I paid. Well i went and the lady there pretty much did my whole face. She was great at choosing colors (good for indecsive me) and was definitely experienced. I feel pretty comfortable and excited to go there on my wedding day.
