To tan or not to tan?

Ok, I used to tan and haven't done it for a few years now.  Whenever I get a tan from being outside, my fi always tells me how great I look n that I look better with a tan but he didn't want me doing the tanning bed thing anymore because of the risks associated with sun exposure.  I was thinking about doing a spray tan or something for the wedding, but I'm also doing my own make-up, so I'm kind of afraid of changing things up.  What would y'all do?  I think my fi would think I look hot, but I'm nervous about the makeup thing.  Wedding in November so getting a natural tan from outside would be very unlikely. Thanks!

  • try an airbrush tan (the tech does it for you) not a booth. I get really sallow in the winter, so when i went to try on my dress it was pretty obvious cause the nice summer glow was MIA.  I just had my 2nd airbrush and this came out looking really natural.  The first one was way too dark but i bought a set of 3 so i could do trial and error and to see how long it lasted.  I recommend doing a trial run and asking the people who work there.  So far a very good experience, and i will be golden for my boudoir shots for this weekend.  Best of luck!

  • I used to tan in tanning beds all the time when I was younger, but I stopped because of the risks associated with it.  I also recommend airbrush tanning.  I've done it before and I loved it.  It looks completely natural, doesn't streak, and doesn't rub off on your clothing.

As far as your makeup goes, it's no different than what you'd do with a natural tan.  You apply it like normal - just have to use darker foundation.

Like PP said, if you choose to do an airbrush tan, definitely do a trial run so you can see if it's too dark or not dark enough.

    Good luck!

  • As a melanoma survivor, I'm glad you're considering a spray tan rather than tanning beds! I get spray tans all the time and have never been orange, like many people think.

The booths are okay, but take some trial and error before you feel comfortable with them. I'd recommend going to a spa or salon where a technician does the spraying. The shades are custom this way, so you can go as light or dark as you want.

When I do spray tans, I don't have the solution sprayed on my face, just up to my neck. I use a shade darker foundation and then some bronzer blends it all perfectly. You don't want to get too much darker than your natural skin tone anyway, so don't worry too much about makeup.

Get a tan or two done before the wedding to try it out - most salons offer package deals that are cheaper than buying individually. Good luck!
  • I am California where everyone is always tan.  I think you should try using a gradual tanning lotion so you can control how tan you want to be.  Jergen makes a gradual tanning lotion that is green tea smell so the smell isn't as offensive as those other self tanners.  Or if you are scared of lotions, they have foam nowadays that are also gradual tanners.  Urban decay makes a foam one that works pretty great.

I love airbrush tanning too but sometimes you do not know how dark to light it will turn out.

As for makeup, since you don't normally wear makeup it sounds like, try a more natural approach with makeup.  Just to even out the skin tone, contour and highlight your features.  Natural color gloss, a little blush, and some mascara.  Accentuate what you have.

Me too Leisel!  Fist pump for the melanoma survivors!

And I ditto her comments, I've never had a tan that looks orange, but I don't get too many, since I am naturally very pale.

And I must say I'm really happy to hear that people are getting smarter about staying out of the stupid tanning beds.  Makes my day.

</div><div>Seriously though, the orangey tans are a thing of the past. Even in the last couple years there has been such an improvement in self tanning lotions and sprays, hopefully people will realize that and will ease off the tanning beds or sun tanning for that matter.</div>
