Regular makeup vs airbrush?

Hi ladies,

I'm getting ready to book my makeup for the big day and I am not sure which way to go.  I don't normally wear a lot of makeup - my daily routine is eyeliner and maybe eyeshadow; but it always ends up smeared by the end of the day, so I definitely want to get it professionally done.

It is pretty much gauranteed that it will be hot and HUMID in NW Indiana at the end of July.  Everything's indoors minus some photos, so sweating isn't a huge issue, but could be something to consider.

What are your thoughts?  I'll of course do a trial, but would rather only have to do one!

Re: Regular makeup vs airbrush?

  • First- Super jealous of the pic with The Cup

Second- My MUA said that she would do airbrush make-up the day of if I needed it. I have great skin (her opinion) and said it wasn't needed. I did normal make-up day of and it was fine.
  • It might be worth discussing with your MUA. I like the airbrush makeup (I bought my own Dinair system). I have large pores, and I've found airbrushing the foundation and more importantly, blush, looks better on me than traditional makeup. It held up very well for my epics outdoors in the sun for a few hours. I don't know about humid, since I live in a dry location.

  • I highly recommend airbrush makeup.  It is lightweight while providing great coverage, is long-lasting and photographs beautifully.  I was airbrushed for my E-pics and wedding and it still looked great at the end of the night both times.

I did my first trial with regular foundation and didn't care for it since I had already been airbrushed for my E-pics.  I saw a big difference.
  • I was married on the hottest day of July in CT last year, and my airbrush makeup stayed put.  Highly recommend.

Also, I'm like you in that I don't tend to wear much makeup day to day (I'm a curled lashes with mascara and eyebrow pencil-only girl), but it's okay to go heavier on the eyeliner and lip liner on the day of.  I love how my eyes look in all our photos, especially the black and whites, because of how much my artist darkened the lines around my eyes.
  • i had airbrush makeup done for my wedding (and so did my BMs) and it was fantastic. i know you mentioned a trial....i went for a one before booking with one of my BMs, who also got a trial (WORTH THE MONEY!!!!!!!!!) and got it done for my bridals, and the wedding.
  • this is the number one question I get with every single bride.  regular or airbrush?

Its honestly based on what you want on your day and how skilled your makeup artist is w/ her airbrush.  if she's not good its going to look HORRIBLE (takes skill to keep an even coat and not look caked on)

That said, if she can do airbrush the benefit of it is that you get a flawless finish which means less editing from photographers and more of your natural features in the pics.  I only use MAC products because of the finish on them, they're sweat and water resistant which is a HUGE benefit in humidity.  The sweat literally beads up and drips off.

If she doesn't have MAC or access to MAC, you can go to the MAC pro store at north park, find the perfect color for you and bring it w/ and she'll be able to use it in her compressor.

She is going to charge more for the airbrush....so if you're on a budget or you feel like you really dont need it (gorgeous skin and good weather and little exposure to direct sunlight/sweatiness) then go for the natural!!  You might end up dabbing off the sweat and powdering throughout the night but thats okay!

Its 100% a personal choice for you and dont ever feel pressured to go for airbrush if you honestly dont want it.

Good luck w/ your decision!  email me directly if you have any questions:  hima@himapandya.com
