Laser Hair Removal

I got an e-mail today for a Groupon for laser hair removal... 6 treatments for a small area (underarms) for $99, or 6 treatments for medium area (brazilian) for $149.  Has anyone gotten laser hair removal on their underarms or a brazilian?  Will 6 treatments be enough, and can I fit 6 treatments in the next 5 months?  I would love to not have to shave either, especially on the honeymoon.

Re: Laser Hair Removal

  • Keep in mind that 6 treatments usually means you will get 3 on each arm.  My cousin had this done and when they say "six treatments", it is to one spot.  So you would be looking at $200 to get both done.
I'm not sure about if you can get it all done in 5 months.  You might want to call and ask the office if you are serious about getting it done.  My cousin is more than happy with her results and didnt have to shave for her wedding or her honeymoon!

I say call the office of the doctor and get more information.
  • Deff call and get more info. I've been personally burned with laser (upper lip). So I would not reccommend getting it done so soon before the wedding. Get waxed before and that should hold you down. :)
  • If purchased the 6 treatments from groupon for my underarms. It included 6 treatments for EACH underarm. I think 6 might be enough. I noticed that my hair start thinning after the second session.

  • 6 (if it is six on both) will probably be enough, but you can really only do one per month, so you'll be probably 4-5 in by the wedding.  That will mean you will have to shave a lot less often, but not be totally hair free.
  • Thanks ladies!  I think I may rather get the brazilian one over the underarms.  Does laser hair removal hurt during/after?  I got laser tattoo removal and it was EXTREMELY painful (and didn't work)!
  • I had it done on my underarms, 7 visits and it basically did nothing.  It's a little patchier than it used to be but I still have to shave just as often...
It did hurt a bit, uncomfortable but not excrutiationg...
  • I had my underarms and bikini line lasered.  I'm more than happy with the results.  Everyone's pain threshold is different of course - for me the bikini area hurt a lot more than the underarms.  The nice woman (aesthetician?) that did my laser hair removal told me that the darker the hair, the longer it takes to get rid of it.  I can't remember how many sessions I had, but 3 years later, I have peach fuzz here and there, but it's 95% less hair than before.  Good luck!

  • I had my underarms and bikini done. It was well worth the cost. I had about 12 treatments total on each and am left with just a few hairs. Treatments were spaced apart by 6 weeks. The pain increased with each treatment as they turned up the laser the farther along you are. Highly recommend!
  • Laser hair removal is worth every penny!!! I had my lip and under arms lasered. My under arm hair is virtually gone... I only have a few, fine hairs that I run a razor over every week or two. I used to shave everyday. However, it took 2 years and approximately 12 sessions to get to that point. As a side note, I bought a Tria (i.e.- home laser) for my legs and arms. I found the results comparable to the office laser, but the laser head is much smaller, so it takes much longer to cover large areas.
  • I did laser hair removal through a groupon on my underarms. I started seeing results after just one visit! It really depends on the type of hair you have, too. The lighter and thinner the hair, the better luck you'll have. I found they recommend booking one appointment ever six weeks but I would suspect that you'll see results and not have to shave as often after 3 or 4. I haven't had it done again in about 3 months, and the hair is growing back, just a lot lighter and thinner. So I have to go for "maintenance" treatments every so often.
As far as painful goes, as long as they use the cooling gel on you you'll be fine. And they can change the strength of the laser for you depending on your pain threshold. But, the stronger the laser, the better it works. It burns a little bit but isn't bad. The worst thing for me was actually the smell! It smelled like burning hair (I know, duh, but I wasn't prepared for that.).
Personally, I wanted to start with the underarms b/c of how sensitive an area it is in the Brazilian world b/c I was nervous. But that's just me!

  • So I went last night for my first treatment on my underarms.  The place that I am going to is the only place in the area that has a painless laser.  It felt like a few tiny pin pricks, but really didn't hurt.  They also guarantee results, so if any hair grows back after my treatments, I can get more treatments for free.  They are offering groupon pricing through December 31st, so I am going to buy a package for the brazilian too.  I will only be able to get like 3 treatments in before the wedding... hoping it thins it out enough though by then.
  • I have had 6 laser hair removal sessions for my underarms from a similar groupon deal. I got 6 for each underarm for $99.

I would not hang your hat on being totally hairless in 5 months with these treatments. Everyone is very different when it comes to laser!
I do still have hair, it is just significantly thinner now. They told me I would probably need 10 treatments to be totally hairless. Again, everyone is different in these regards and you may only need 6.

You are also running the risk of skin discoloration or damage - which is rare and did not happen to me, but is a factor you should probably think about with your wedding quickly approaching.

You also may not be able to get all of your treatments in that short time frame. I had to wait at least 5 weeks between mine because the hair hadn't always grown back yet!

All that being said, I am so glad I did it! It was well worth it. If you think you are up for the pain, I say go for it, just remember that you will likely not be hairless in time for the wedding. Good luck!
