Nail Color - natural or french tip?

Hi ladies,

I can't decide, should I go with natural color of french tip nails? I have really nice healthy nails, both styles look great. My dress is bright white, my make-up and hair are toward a vintage 1940s look. What is in? What do you recommend?

Thanks for the help!

Re: Nail Color - natural or french tip?

  • When you say french tip, do you mean painted or acrylic nails?  My opinion is to be yourself, no matter what your theme is.  If you often have your nails done, it would probably not be out of character to have them done.  But if you don't usually have them done, I would do nothing fancy with them, other than a manicure with buffing and a clear coat.

  • I mean Painted, no Acrylics. Thank you for the advice I will definitely keep it in mind. I am a pretty simple girl, so i know it will be either or.

    Thanks again!

Yeah, I hate french tips.  I would go with a nice clear polish or a nude or a pale accent color.
  • I love the look of a french manicure, but it is totally your call.  I typically keep my nails polished with sheer neutral colors.  I am looking forward to having a french manicure for my wedding!

  • I like french tips, but my natural nails aren't very nice. if your natural nails look good, then definitely go with a natural manicure.

  • Perhaps a white on white french? It is a more subtle look than the standard french.
  • It depends on what you are comfortable with.  I had french tip acrylics once and absolutely hated them.  If you've never done them before I wouldn't, I'd keep them more natural.  Maybe just a buff and clear polish.  Depending on what your wedding colors are you could maybe use a light shade of one of them.  Mine are turquoise and pink so I'm going with a pale pink polish.
  • I have nice long nails as well, I'm not planning on using fake nails, but I really like the look for a french manicure, so that's what I'm doing.
  • I personally don't like french.  If you have healthy nails, you can't go wrong with "Ballet Slippers" by Essie.  It's the perfect shade of pale pink.
  • i personally don't like the look of a french manicure. to me it is very 80s and it's what all the porn stars have now because they think it makes them look "classy." i'm just going with a nice pale pink. i secodn Ballet Slippers and also i love Essie's Mademoiselle. but try to use OPI polish or Dashing Diva instead of Essie--it lasts much longer so will stay through your honeymoon.
  • You ladies are amazing, thank you so much for your advice!
  • At my bachlorette weekend, I tried Essie's Sugar Daddy. It has just a slight hint of pink, I loved it, its so sweet and innocent looking! I definitely need to try Ballet Slippers and see if OPI has a similar color.

    Thanks again ladies!

    Best wishes,

    Pam

  • OPI Bubble Bath is another great pick, very similar to ballet slippers.  And I totally agree with Jane regarding french!
  • I am going with an American Manicure - which is a lighter,  natural looking type of french manicure.  The colors are sheer.
  • Thank you lyn_mello, I have never heard of an American Manicure, I am definitely going to try it this weekend to see how it looks!

OPI has a great website that shows the nail color on a hand that you can adjust the skin color. Thank you AHorton84 for the Bubble Bath suggestion, I will totally check it out too!

    You ladies are the best!
  • I wanted something edgier and different... so did not want to go with a French.

I saw a picture of Rihanna and her nails were short and painted a matte grey.  My BMs were all wearing a light pewter, and my shoes were sort of silver/grey-ish, so I went with the grey and it looked very awesome.  I toyed with the idea of getting gels, or acrylics, but either way I'd have kept them short - any sort of longer nail just wouldn't have been me!

So i agree with what was said here - make sure it fits your style!

  • If you're going to have your nails done, try a salon as soon as possible.  Not everyone can do a good French manicure...

I prefer a softer tip, so instead of stark white, I use Essie's "Baby's Breath"  (with Ballet slippers).  It's a soft combination.

    Enjoy!
