Should I buy Spanx?

My dress fitting is coming up and I need to bring undergarments.  I'm not heavy, but I have a form fitting dress.  I was thinking of going au natural, but everyone insists on wearing spanx.  I just feel like it would add more bulk.  Anyone have any thoughts?

  • Things to consider:

    - Material the dress is made from (i.e. thin silk = probably spanx; heavy, thick lace = probably don't need spanx).  It matters less whether the dress is form-fitting and more whether the dress is made from a forgiving or unforgiving type of fabric.  There are some dresses that show every bulge even if you're supermodel-skinny, and some that can fit tightly and still be flattering no matter how much you weigh.

    - Time/location/season of your wedding.  If it's an outdoor summer wedding in the South, don't wear Spanx.  If its a winter wedding in Alaska...why not?
  • Spanx does not add bulk.  Spanx squeezes in the bulk.

I highly recommend Spanx- you do have to be careful what type you get depending on your dress. I had a legging type of Spanx that clasped near the front of the stomach and when I wore a form fitting dress you could see the indents of the clasps. I also have a slip-on short skirt Spanx that I really like.

  • I bought spanx and never wore them. I just went with nada underneath, of course I wore nude panties/bra to the fitting.

It's totally what makes YOU feel comfortable. if you feel comfortable and confident without and "smoothing out" then don't bother.
  • Target has a spanx alternative brand (same designer) called Assets that are much cheaper.  If you're unsure- purchase a pair of Assets- if you like the look or what it does- go with the spanx or keep the Assets....  if you don't like it- you're only out $20 rather than $30-35.  :)  I love my spanx and assets. :)

  • I am wearing spanx, just to help smooth out my waistline and give me a nice shape. I bought them and tried on my dress with them and without them. You could buy a pair and then try them on at home with panties on underneath and if you can't see the difference then don't wear them. I also have worn them in the past under tanks and blazer and it just helps to smooth everything out. Some people love them! It's a personal choice.

  • The top of my dress was really form-fitting. At first, I'd planned on wearing nothing underneath, and it DID look good. But then I tried it on with one of those long-line corset bras, and it looked a million times better. It smoothed things out and held my boobs in place (I was a 34B at the time, so it's not like I was super busty or anything, but it still made a difference). I'd recommend having SOMETHING underneath a form-fitting dress.

As for actual Spanx, I have one of their body suits because I do community theatre. I've had quite a few body suits over the years (Some were shape wear, some just regular Capezio body suits), and my Spanx one has hands down my favorite ... and the most durable to date.
