no makeup trial

I can't make up my mind if I should DIY my makeup or hire someone to do it. The problem with hiring someone is that I won't be able to have a trial since my wedding location is 5 hours away. I don't know if I should risk not liking it. I'm just looking for some opinions from anyone who didn't have a trial.

Re: no makeup trial

  • I'm a makeupartist in AZ, and while I would HIGHLY recommend having a trial; if it is absolutely out of the question and you want to hire someone out - research, research, research! Look at their portfolio and reviews and allow yourself extra time when getting ready on your big day so you have time to adjust your makeup if you aren't 100% happy with it.

Look at their port and find reviews - on and off their website. Iif you can, try to talk to people who have used that artist before and see what their experience is. You want someone reliable, punctual, talented, and professional.

If you choose the DIY route - I was too excited to do it myself - there are tons of tutorials on wedding looks out there. Make sure to use a primer, waterproof liner and mascara and if you can get your hands on a setting spray (I suggest UD's All Nighter), use it. It will make you makeup last all night, even with rigorous dancing.

I hope that helps you in making your decision!

  • If you can find a way to do a trial, I would really recommend it.  I was so particular about how my makeup might go that I actually had a trial with the salon before I even booked them.  You don't know how their style might mesh with yours, how your skin might react to the makeup, etc.

If you're considering DIYing your makeup, it might be worth doing a self trial.  Pick a day to do your makeup the way you would do it on your wedding day.  Take pictures when you first do it, and over the course of the day to see how well it wears.  If you like it in person and like how well it translates to photos, then there's no reason to not DIY.  If you've got a friend who's good with makeup, maybe enlist their help.  Sephora is also good about doing little makeovers and helping you find things that will work for you.

I'm in the same boat. I'm getting married in Hawaii and arriving the day before my wedding. I have no time for a trial so I'm just going to hope that it comes out great. I am going to bring pictures to show the MUA what I like. I also only have 1.5 hours for my hair and makeup.....talk about stressful!

  • If you decide to DIY, you could go to Sephora and get a consultation. It only 'costs' a $50 gift card.
I actually did this before my engagement pics, so my makeup was done and I got a good makeup lesson.
I would highly recommend it if you have no other way to do a trial.
