Breaking out! Wedding is only 5 weeks away!

I rarely break out (once every other month) however recently I've really broken out. My wedding is only 5 weeks away! What do I do?

  • Because it's so soon maybe you can go see a dermatologist. I started using Murad with my Clairisonic Mia, although for some reason I've had no breakouts since the beginning of December and now this week my face is breaking out again. I believe it has a lot to do with dress. Also, drink lots of water!!

  • Have you changed anything in your skin care routine?  New foundation?  Have you gotten a facial recently?  Have you changed your eating habits?

If the answer is no to all of the above, then you'll probably think I'm nuts, but I swear by this and so do my teenage kids.  Start cleansing your face with olive oil mixed with a little bit of tea tree oil.  Even if you have oily skin, it will make it less oily, not more so.  It doesn't take much, I keep mine in a little bottle in the bathroom.  Rub it all over your face and take a hot washcloth and steam your face for 1-2 minutes each day.  The steaming is crucial so don't skip it.  If you want more info on it, google "oil cleansing method."  There are tons of blogs about it.

  • For treatments, salycilic acid is the best for cleaning out pores. You can get a 2% solution over the counter. Benzoyl Peroxide is best for spot treatments. I love Paula's Choice for these products.  I've had chronic acne since I was 14 and this is the first time I've ever been really clear.

It is probably stress related. Don't touch your face, clean your make-up brushes, exercise, eat well, get lots of rest, drink lots of water, and wash your pillow-cases once a week. Also, do something to help yoiu de-stress, like yoga, exercise, or taking long hot baths (or all three!). Also, invest in a high-quality facial if you can.

  • Honestly I stopped drink any sweet tea just water as I had a huge breakout before make up trial and I NEVER EVER break out..maybe one here or there every other month. I then went back to my normal routine of Patricia Wexler Acne Stat cleanser from BBW ($16) for a 4 month supply for me....and any spot I may look like I am getting I dab 4hr clearasil on it.

  • I would go to a dermatologist. I have been going yearly since I was 13, and it really keeps my skin on track, and she may be able to give you some quick-fix options.
  • Hey, don't stress.

This is a recipe I got out of my return to beauty book that is all natural made at home stuff and it works way better than anything you can buy (and is better for your skin).

Wash your face with this for a few days.

    1/4 cup water
    1 tsp baking soda
    1 tsp lemon juice

Mix in a bowl, apply some to a warm, damp washcloth and wash face. Rinse with warm water.

For spot acne, crush onion and dab on spots

Olive oil, tea tree, and citrus oils are all great for breakouts.  My personal "miracle cure" is an egg white mask.  You whip them until they're kind of soft and foamy, then add about a teaspoon of lemon juice or zest from orange peels.  Leave it on for about 15 minutes, then gently wipe off with a warm washcloth.

The egg whites dry stiff and can be really itchy and irritating while on, but they work great for breakouts.  My skin felt kind of weird the first time I used it, even after it came off, but by morning most of the redness was gone and my skin was really soft and not at all oily.

  • thank you all for the suggestions!
  • Don't exfoliate. I have dealt with acne forever (since 13). I've been on numerous medications and cleansers. Right now, the best my skin has been in a while, I use SpectroGel cleanser and wash using my hands, not a washcloth. Though using something rough or exfoliating sounds like a good idea (I thought it was), my dermatologist clarified that doing that actually just spreads the bacteria over your face since washcloths and exfoliating break open your skin.

Once I stopped using a washcloth and exfoliating, my skin improved drastically :)
