Airbrush makeup vs Traditional for oily skin?

I have somewhat oily skin that is sensitive and prone to breakouts.  Breakouts usually leave marks on my fair skin.  Which makeup would be best to go with for someone like me--airbrush or traditional--for the wedding day?

Re: Airbrush makeup vs Traditional for oily skin?

  • My daughter had oily skin and (fairly bad) acne on my wedding day and had never worn makeup before.  My MUA did a light airbrush application and natural makeup on her and she looked beautiful.  My MUA said the airbrush would cover the acne and scars better and my daughter's skin looked flawless.

I also loved my airbrush but I have dry skin.  My advice would be to have a trial with airbrush before you decide.  Some girls have not liked it.
  • That is good to know--it seemed to work for both your skin types! I was leaning toward airbrush but I have super sensitive skin and never have had professional makeup of any kind done, so was wondering what would be better.
  • I have oily skin and tend to LIKE heavy coverage, so I did not do airbrush. I used some fantastic foundation (I gave it to my MUA to use on me) and my skin looked great all night.
It's going to be a bit of trial and error.
    What do you usually wear?

My skin reacts funny to a lot of things.  I usually wear a little clinique concealer to cover any acne spots and brush over Bare Minerals Original Foundation.  It's ok but I don't know if that would be wedding worthy--not enough coverage or staying power.  My skin is so temperamental that I tried to switch to Bare Minerals Matte Foundation, thinking it would be a good idea and my skin broke out one night after just hours of using it.  I had terrible cysts after wearing it for a few days that took a month or two to go UGH.  So I am a little nervous about what I put on my face.  That being said I guess I should do my trial as early as possible in case my skin reacts badly.  I have 9 months until the wedding.
  • I would definitely go to a dermatologist if you can. I've had cystic acne since 3rd grade, and I've been seeing a derm ever since. Accutane helped a lot, but I still get cysts (hardly any actual zits, though).
  • I have had skin issues and 6 months before my wedding I started using the Mia with Murad cleaner. My skin cleared up after a month or two. I did get airbrushed for my wedding and my forehead Is very oily but was not noticed in my pics. I got married in Hawaii so it was very warm and the airbrush stayed all night. My makeup was done at 8 AM and I had sunset pics at 7 PM and my makeup still looked perfect!

I feel your pain. That is frustrating and painful literally.  I have been to a good derm in the past and b/c I do have a hormonal problem he just told me at this point to try birth control (which ive been on (on and off but mostly on) a long time.   It helps some.  Prior to that he did give me antibiotics and antibacterial creams etc, but cant stay on that forever as it is a a chronic problem.  Accutane can be risky so I don't want to go that route but I'm very glad it helped you.  Diet helps some as b/c it is an internal issue for me--PCOS thought to be due to insulin issues.  Limited processed foods and carbs helps. Also some say dairy--I cut out milk but I eat greek yogurt and cheese occasionally. I use more expensive stuff (DDF line) on my face and it definitely helps keep it in check but it isnt perfect and I scar way too easily.  It is definitely frustrating!

You know I've tried the Mia but I think after a while, especially if you have cysts, it just spread the bacteria around and made things worse.  Plus I think my skin is just sensitive to add to my problems (yay lol) so I lay off of manual exfoliation.  Anything with glycolic acid has been a skin saver for me and keeps me much clearer.  I love DDF's skin care line--the sensitive cleanser and the 5% glycolic wash.  I never tried Murad but heard it works for a lot of people.  Did you get oily with the airbrushing though after a while? Good to know it has staying power though! And I'm sure (I hope) that the photogs can airbrush pics a little with all the technology LoL Airbrush me away! Lol I think I will do an airbrush trial.  It didnt break you out at all?

BTW what kind of foundation did you use?
  • The airbrush didn't break me out and I left it on over night. I'm not sure if I ever ended up oily. I had it done early in the morning and never came back to my hotel until late...and I was a litte drunk, so I didn't notice lol. I will say that my sunset pics were 12 hours after my airbrush was applied and I didn't look oily or shiny.in my pics. Def give it a try!!

That sounds great.  Thanks for answering my questions! I think I'll do an airbrush trial.
