wedding day makeup

Has anyone on here ever thought of using, or used one of the makeup counters in a department store (ex. Macy's) as their makeup person for their wedding day?  I have 2 friends who made appointments at MAC in their local mall for their wedding day and seemed very happy with the results.  I believe they were either required to buy $50 worth of products, or pay $50 if they did not want to purchase anything, but either way it seems like it could be a cost saving alternative since some MUA can be pretty pricey in my area.

Re: wedding day makeup

  • I did the same thing at Sephora ($50 gift card) for my engagement pics and loved it. But it really is a hit or miss. You may want to try a trial, and see if you can get the same person on your day, if possible.
If you don't mind doing your own makeup as a Plan B if you hate it, I think it's a great idea.
  • I know someone who got a MAC person from the mall makeup counter and it was visibly the ugliest wedding makeup I've ever seen. Don't do it!
  • Agreed with PP.  I purchase MAC products, and decided to have a consultation one day.  It was the worst my makeup has ever looked.  However, my cousin had her's done by someone else, and it looked great.

  • See, with Mall Makeup Artists doing your makeup, they go one of two ways:

    1. Perfect Flawless Makeup
    2. Drag Queen.

In my experience, it's pretty much 50/50.  If you can find somebody who's really I would ask her/him discreetly if they would be available to do that for you for x amount of money, probably off site.

Sorry but I think the MAC counter makes people look like drag queens.  Their looks are very bold and dramatic, not something most people want on their wedding day.

My friend hired someone from macys and they were a no show on the day of the event. You get what you pay for. With the amount of People watching you that day, Don't risk it!
  • my suggestion as a professional makeup artist is try the counter prior to your big day to test out the artist but make sure if you like them to make an appointment with that same artist.

You can purchase all the products and practice the look on your own just use the counter person to teach you the steps to achieve the look.

I say if you want to take the risk and go to the counter the day of it is a 50/50. This is your big day and all eyes are going to be on you. Dont cut costs on you. That is your beauty beacause in 10 years all your going to have to look back on are those pictures not the day itself or the venue... so look at a professional makeup artist as an investment just like the photographer. Search through craigslist for more affordable artist. You are going to want a mobile makeup artist to come to you, you may not think of this now but time prior to your big day gets really precious and you may not get the chance to head over to that counter.
