How Do You Whiten Your Teeth?

I'm SO SO nervous about smiling in my wedding photos and having yellow teeth but I'm afraid to bleach my teeth or anything like that. My step sister used white strips before her wedding, her teeth looked gorgeous but now two years later her dentist is telling her she did some serious damage and her teeth are in awful condition. I have sensitive teeth as it is.

Right now I have toothpaste with baking soda in it. I brush my teeth 2-3 times a day for 2-3 minutes being very picky about it and I floss and rinse with mouthwash but I haven't seen much change in the last 3 weeks.

How do you guys whiten your teeth?

I'm on a budget so I can't afford expensive going to the dentist visits.

Re: How Do You Whiten Your Teeth?

  • I have used white strips in the past at the direction of my dentist. I would ask your dentist what is best for you since you say you have sensitive teeth and that will most definitely make it worse. Since you say you brush the way you do, I'm willing to bet your teeth are probably lookin pretty sparkley as it is girlfriend, haha
  • I have used Crest Whitestrips numerous times in the past several years. I also used them before the wedding. They have never damaged or harmed my teeth, in fact, I have never had any major dental problems and I am almost 28 yrs old. My dentist has told me they are perfectly safe as long as you follow the instructions. Maybe its time to get a second opinion or switch dentists?
  • I don't have sensitive teeth but I have weak enamel (luckily no cavities ever though..knock on wood). I avoid whitening toothpastes bc they are abrasive and wear off your enamel even more. I have had great results with the listerine whitening rinse. It's non-abrasive (obviously) and perfectly safe unless you swallow it or something. I've never used the strips, but my teeth are pretty white on their own so I never felt like spending the money.

  • I use the Crest whitening mouthwash after I brush.  It has never made my teeth sensitive to cold like Crest Whitestrips did.  Use that mouthwash twice daily and you'll be sparkly in no time.  I switched to it at the recommendation of a coworker who was a heavy smoker - and she had snow white teeth!
  • I have senstive teeth and have spoken to my dentist about whitening.  They gave me something called MI paste to use.  It is a fluoride treatment that I use 3-4 times a week after I brush.  She said it should help decrease the sensitivity before I whiten.  They recommended the Rembrandt trays or the Aqua Fresh trays.  She thought that the trays would work better for me because I have a large smile and the strips won't cover the whole thing.
  • I've used Crest Whitestrips, too, at the suggestion of my dentist.  They made my teeth sensitive, so I had to space out the application.  Instead of using, say, two strips a day, I would use one strip every 1-2 days.  That being said, you're not supposed to use them too frequently--I believe the directions say you should use an entire box only 1-2 times a year.
  • I used Crest Whitestrips without any issues.  I talked to my dentist prior and after and he said it was fine.
I think Crest Whitestrips has a sensativity kind out too.

  • I used the strips before and they hurt my teeth. When I got my Invislign I spoke to my doctor about whitening before the wedding and he is giving me a take home kit. Since I have Invislign I have to brush after eating anything and drinking anything but water (I would say 4-5 times a day with Crest Extra Whitening Fluoride Anti-cavity). My teeth have greatly whitened so much I am not sure I will even get the $600 kit. I would see what your dentist says about their kits and see how your teeth shape up closer to your wedding.

I too am very self conscience about my smile and coloring. I really am getting results with the crest and it doesn't hurt my teeth at all.
