Advice for a Brazilian Virgin?

Re: Advice for a Brazilian Virgin?

  • I also have only had Brazilian's but I can fully recommend it.  Yes it hurts - i wear my workout gear as I sweat from the pain, it is because the hair (if you have shaved it all in the past especially) has grown into the pubic bone or at least has deep roots - all of this in one of the most sensitive areas of a womans body combined with wax and removal makes for pain.  But the more and more you get the less and less painful and time it takes,  my first appointment was almost an hour but now I'm down to 20 minutes or less.  Go every 4-6 weeks for the first bit as you don't want to let it get too long.  Start now so you've had a few before the wedding.  Also consider leaving a strip down the middle as the lower part of that area is definitly the most painful - well it was for me anyway.  I'm planning on getting one a couple of days before the wedding as things can be a little tender, red and bumpy as you may already be familiar with.  The "back" is nice and doesn't really hurt at all, I was pleasantly surprised by this the first time and it does leave one feeling very smooth....  Hope this helps and good luck, just remember it will be worth it, no pain, no gain.
  • I am glad that someone else asked this question. None of my friends get waxed and they are pretty shy about that area so I don't have anyone to talk about it with. I have never been waxed before and am kinda worried. All of these tips though are fantastic and I am much more calm about it now. Still not looking forward to the pain though. What kind of an exfoliante are we talking about too? Like, just a normal bath soap with beads in it or something special?
  • Your tolerance for pain changes with your menstral cycle. Don't even try to do it during PMS time because it will be awful. Try and schedule it mid-cycle, the time when you are most fertile, because your pain tolerance is highest then.

Also, I've been doing Brazillian for some time now and one of the most painful spots is the regular bikini area. If you can handle that, you can get the whole shebang.

Try and do it yourself. It's not that hard, and you don't have to show your privates to a stranger. Plus it's way cheaper. I always say, the only thing worse that having all your hair ripped out, is paying someone $60 to do it to you.
  • Totally worth it, gals!

I'm getting married in June-  I got my first brazilian last month just to try it out- I didn't want any shocking surprises days before my wedding.

Apparently hair grows in 4 cycles & the more times you get waxed, the less it grows back. (which is good if you like to be hair free, anyway!) It didn't get super red, & no bumps.  Just a little tender/ sore for the first day.

It wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be- Pain wise and the awkward level.  I searched for places in my area, & went to the one with the best reviews.

I say it's totally worth it.  I loved the way it looked & felt... soooo nice.. a zillion times better than shaving, and if you hate it, hey- no one will make you go back.

As for the pain- 'No Scream Cream' works well, I hear.  Pain relievers, contrary to popular belief, won't work.  They work for headaches because they respond to the source of pain.  Since they take awhile to kick in, and you won't have pain BEFORE the wax, they're of no use for the process.  After, however, they should help some.

As for the backside... go for it. That was the least awkward & least painful bit of the whole experience.

    Good luck!!!
  • I totally agreee with the hard wax part. I find it doesn't hurt much at all during or after.

Also Avoid asparin as it is a blood thinner and if you have blood spots which may happen for the first time, the hair does not want to evacuate that first time. (It doesn't happen to me but I've heard it can happen)

Also if you have a lot of hair or coarse hair (a woman of colour) hard wax is the best at getting everything the first time and not have repeated applications. It may be harder to find a tech who is skilled with hard wax, but it is worth the search.

Last but not least I ask my wax tech if I can get a pair of gloves for myself so I can help pull the skin taught without adding any of my finger germs to the area during the waxing. This help to put my mind on pulling the skin taught as well. The tenseness leaves that area and is then in my biceps and triceps. Think of it as a workout???

It will hurt a bit more the first time. Don't let that discourage you for later brazilians.

    My two cents

    Good Luck
  • I would definitely recommend trying it before the wedding if you're considering it.  I've had them done several times over the last three years and I break out in a rash *every* time.  And I'm not talking about redness for one day, it lasts for almost a week.  It's basically like getting an acne breakout on your hoo-hah, not very attractive and definitely not something you want to start out your honeymoon with.

From a pain perspective it does hurt, but the worst part is the front, not the inner nooks and crannies.  The backside is the least painful, and they usually do that part last so it seems really easy in comparison.

Look for professionals who can do this in 15-20 minutes.  My first time was with a woman who took over half an hour, and there's just no good reason to draw it out that long.  I pay $35-$45 depending on the professional.  Some waxers are better than others, so if you're not satisfied your first time I'd suggest trying it again with someone else if you decide you like the bare look.

Even for someone like me who has to deal with a full week of rashes/bruising down there each time, I think the end result is still worth it and I will continue to go.  It's all about your (and possibly your FI's) personal preference :)

Oh, and do NOT try to do it at home!! I have heard way too many horror stories of women who try to save a few bucks by doing it themselves and they end up seriously injuring themselves (ripping off skin with hair... horrible to even think about).  Unless you are experienced in self-waxing and have seen how a professional approaches that area, do not attempt!

  • I have super sensitive skin and I've never had a reaction to any wax, you get little red bumps regardless of where you wax, they go away within 12-24 hours at the most. YOU WILL BE FINE!!!! it hurts a bit, but its over so quickly and remember to breathe it hurt less when you breathe out. If you can survive waxing your underarm, then anywhere else is nothing!
  • Im thinking about getting waxed as well but Im not sure any good places in New jersey. Does anyone know where I could go?
  • There's a really great product called Tend Skin -- you can get it at some salons & definitely online (I think I ordered it from Amazon last time).  Use it after you wax to exfoliate & moisturize the skin.  It'll make all the difference -- fewer ingrown hairs and no itching.
  • Hello,
I read your question (and some of the replies) and felt like I should comment. I am an esthetician (and nurseing student) and have been doing brazillian waxing for the past 9 years and I have some advice to for you, and for all the women looking to get waxed. One of the things that I tell my clients is that the week before, and the week after your periods are going to be the worst pain wise so there is one optimal week a month to be waxed. There is a topical alalgesic (pain med) that is available over the counter called Emla cream that works great to ease the pain, however it is about $60 (in Canada) for a small tube of it. The best thing to try is advil, or motrin 30 minutes before being waxed. The area's that generally hurt the most are the top of the pubic bone, or the outter part of the labia majora (big lips). I also recommend finding someone who has experience in brazillian waxing (men can get it done too) as I have heard many horror stories of waxing gone bad. Another ting to note is that you should NEVER get waxed in you are on Acutane (for acne), and coffee, marijuana, nicotine and alcohol all make the body more sensitive to waxing and should be avoided for a minimum of 2 hours prior to the service. When you are looking for an esthetician to perform this service, ask if she uses hard wax vs. strip wax. Hard wax dosen't stick to the skin, only to the hair and therefore make it ideal for getting into the labia minora (inside lips) and for getting the hairs that were missed the first time around. Never should any part of the body be waxed more then once with any kind of strip wax as lifting and tearing is sure to be the result. If there happens to be an "accident" while being waxed, immediatly apply a cool cloth to the area and an antibiotic such as polysporin to prevent blistering and scarring. Another thing. NEVER should the ethetician use a metal, or non-disposable spatula while doing a brazillian wax (or underarm) due to bodily fluids and the chance of bleeding. Also, the spatula should NEVER be re- dipped into the wax after being applied to the skin and should always be thrown away and a new stick used for the next strip. I use large popsicle sticks an break them in half and use approximatly 20 of them for every brazillian wax I do. As for healing time, if the brazillian wax was done properly it should be sensitive for a maximum of 2 days. A cool compress can hlp to alievate some tenderness, and bathing, tanning, oaps, creams, lotions, hot tubs, sauna's and intercourse should be avoided for a minimum of 24 hours post wax. One last thing. The day before and 2 days after the wax you should exfoliate the area to reduce the chance of ingrown hairs.  loofa and body wash or a gentle body scrub work the best. A lot of clients don't like the feeling of "being 12 years old" and decide to leave a landing strip on the top, this is another option to waxing everything off. I hope that this has answered some of your questions and has better prepared you fo your first wax. PS. I recommend getting your bum done. If you are positioned on your stomach it is far less embarrasing then being on all fours and it is relatively painless. Good luck, you will love it!! ~T
  • hahaha  I've never gotten it done either and I would like to.  I would be afraid of the butt.  I have dark hair and, well, you know.
  • I am the OP and no longer a Brazilian Virigin :-)  Just back from my belated HM and shocked to see how many responses my post got.  You ladies are the best!

Anyway, I went to my regular esthetician, who is very experienced and works at a very nice spa.  The only real difference is they have you shower first and the appt. is slightly longer.  All I did was exfoliate in advance and take a couple Tylenol.  But honestly, the anticipation was MUCH worse than the actual experience.  My "deep bikini waxes" that I had been previously getting were the worst part.  The middle and back was not bad at all.  And my esthetician chatted w/ me the entire time to keep my mind off of what she was doing.

Afterward I was definitely tender for 2 days - but I had done it a few days prior to the HM in anticipation of that.  And I used Bikini Zone.  My DH was so surprised and absolutely loved it.  As did I :-)

My only complaint was the price ($85 - yikes).  So I definitely will only be doing it for special occasions.

As a side note to the engaged ladies - don't feel pressure to do it for your wedding night.  You have enough on your minds to stress out over that, too.  Do it later for a sexy surprise for your new DH!
  • Seriously, some people don't have hair in their butt cracks?

I WOULD recommend getting it done earlier than the week of the wedding for the following reasons:
     1. The first time hurts the most (at least for regular bikni wax)
     2. Everyone's skin is different- some people do not take well to waxing; you can't just say "I didn't have red bumps or itching so you won't"
     3. What if you hate it?  I think it seems pre-pubescent & would make me feel like my husband was a pedophile.
     4. You'll know how much "recovery" time you need.
     5. If the first salon sucks, you can try somewhere else.
     6. I couldn't recommend a trial of a completely new beauty routine for your wedding; even your MAKE-UP you'll try at least once before the big day- this is ripping hair out of your crotch & seems like more chances to mess up than the wrong color of lipstick.
  • oouuuiee, is all I can think as I sit and read with my legs tightly locked together. Breath out... it was something I thought about but you know, after all the information (and it's great info so thanks ladies) I don't think I will be getting the brazilian. I don't have that much of an issue there anyways so I am gonna keep doing what I am doing.

    Thanks ladies! lol
