Very Vintage Hair Help

I want vintage hair, very vintage hair.

The black and white photo is of my great-grandmother on her wedding day. I would like something like that (or the photo in the link) for my hair, but I have no clue how to do it, and I don't want to spend a whole bunch of money on my hair. 
My hair is about shoulder length (and I sort of look like my great grandmother). 

Any advice on how to get one of these styles without going to a salon (which probably couldn't do it anyway, since I live in the middle of nowhere, WI)?

I personally would have a very hard time recreating that myself. I also have stick straight hair, though.

I agree with this.  You may also try curlformers.  My curls last longer with those.

I think humidity will play a big factor with this hairstyle too.  I live in Austin where it's generally 90% humidity at 8AM, 40% by noon, and 20% by 5PM.  If I walk outside with my hair curled like this in the morning, I'm screwed.  It's just something else to consider.

I was a model for a vintage photo shoot and when he did my hair (which is longer than yours) he would put the curling iron on my hair for a few seconds just clamping it like you would a straightner. Then he went further down right below the U crease it just made and clamped it the opposite way to make an upside down U to where it was kind of a fake wave. This was mostly done around the face and a lot of "teasing" was done with plenty of hairspray.
