Makeup artist freaked me out? (skin Q)

Last week I went to a makeup artist for wedding ideas and she did a fantastic job, but she kind of blessed me out for not taking care of my face (?).
She told me that I was going to develop blackheads and all kinds of nasty things if I didn't use an exfoliator and toner (I think?) (among other things).  She didn't try to sell me anything, so it seemed like it was just advice from somebody who knew a lot about beauty.

But... my skin seems just fine.  I only really wash it with hot water in the shower. I wear makeup maybe once a month. Never had breakouts.  I've never seen blackheads.

She had me so freaked out that I went and got an exfoliator, though.  Following the directions, I started using it about three days ago and I woke up this morning WITH A PIMPLE ON MY CHEEK.  I've never had a pimple anywhere other than my chin and forehead, so I'm a little panicked now.

Our wedding is less than two months away and I can't have my face acting crazy.
Could it be possible that using some kind of product would actually make it worse?  Should I just stick with my "nothing" routine because I know it works? Or could my skin actually benefit from trying some new things?

Honestly, if your old routine worked for you I would just stick with that. If you are blessed with naturally clear skin, don't muck it up with products.

  • Stick to what works for you.  Don't go trying anything new this close to your wedding.
  • Ditto to what PP said, and if it stays bad you should go to a dermatologist. I LOVE my derm.
  • I thankfully have never had to go to the dermatologist for anything other than some dry skin issues... I talked to my mom and she said the same thing. I'm just going to leave it alone, no more experimenting with products.
    Thanks guys!
  • Your MUA is being a smartass with you. And, you're breaking out because your skin is resurfacing all the deep down gunk. Yes, she's right that you should do these things, but the fact that she tried to freak you out about it is annoying. Continue to wash your face regularly, and you should be fine. Don't worry, your skin will go back to normal soon! :)

Also, if you're really worried about it, get a professional facial, but I would say maybe no more than a month prior to ease your nerves. Self exfoliating and toning can be a bad thing if you're not using the right products for your skin type.
  • If it isn't broken, why try to fix it?  I wouldn't advise changing a skin care routine that has always worked this close to the wedding.

  • pp is correct, it's weird but when you start using a new cleanser you actually break out. Its your skin pushing everything out. It takes a little while (everyone's skin is different so there is no range in time) sometimes as soon as 2 weeks, to get back to "normal" but the second you change what your using, you may break out again. I'd say if your worried, try to get into see a derm asap just to make sure something bad isn't going on. Professional facials are great but you may break out even more. Just do alot of research before you do anything else. Yes your MUA was right in telling you that you should be doing all those things but sometimes its as simple as a moisturizer at night before bed. Good luck and hope everything clears up before the wedding.
