Help! My spray tan looks awful!!!

Yesterday, I went to pick up my dress for my sister's wedding on the 29th. The dress color is tangerine. I'm a pale-Casper color so it looked terrible on me! My legs being the worst.

So, after asking a few friends what to do since the wedding is in 12 days, they told me to get a Mystic spray tan at Baha... so I went there trying to get information about it and they allowed me to try it for the first time for 1/2 price. I figured since the wedding is far enough away that if I hate the results, it will fade until then.

Well, all night last night I didn't notice anything happening so I figured I just wasted some money and went to sleep. I woke up this morning, looked in the morning, and nearly passed out. I'm ORANGE!!!! Like the exact color I was afraid of turning when I asked the girl yesterday if it will look like a self-tanner. I went about my morning routine and walked into work. At first, people didn't notice, but then once my students came in, they all started whispering and giggling (I'm a teacher). After my class went to special, I went to the bathroom to check myself out to see what all the commotion was... sure enough, to my surprise I have blotches all over! I don't understand...

My spray tan was at 6pm last night and I didn't touch water until 6am this morning. 12 full hours without water anywhere near the spray tan! :-( How can I fix this? My hands and feet got the brunt of the blotchiness but I can deal with that for a couple days... the blotchiness on the face however, not so much.

I'm a natural kind of girl... wear the bare minimum in the make-up department (eyeshadow and lip gloss if I'm going out).

I appreciate any and all help I can get! Also, if you can tell me about how long it will take for this "tan" to fade and if it could get darker, I appreciate it... TIA!

Hot hot hot showers. They're the enemy of a spray tan. And a loofa. The more you shower, the faster it will fade.

In your situation, I would definitely look for a custom mixed airbrush tan where the tan is done by a person not by an auto-machine. The technician can mix the tan specifically for your skintone and it will be much more natural looking.

  • I would try to use a course body scrub with hot water. The scrub will shed the top layer of skin (I know it sounds miserable, but it's not). Your skin might be tender, but use lotion and the tan should be less noticeable.

  • I've heard that a baking soda bath works very well.  Just make sure that the baking soda is fresh (not anything that's been in the cupboard for months).  Stay in the tub for about 30 minutes and let your skin really soak up the moisture.

  • I think I saw on one of the wedding shows where a girl scrubbed it off with toothpaste.  Any sort of loofa or exfoliant will take it off.

Spray tans take practice.  And it's always best to use some kind of tan accelerator or prep cream beforehand to avoid the blotchiness.  It probably didn't come off on the blotchy splots--you most likely missed those areas altogether.

And as far as the color, I am not a fan of Mystic.  I use Versaspa.
  • scrub scrub scrub!
I hear never do a mystic tan...only have a person spray tan you!

  • Bathe in lemons in addition to what others have said.

  • I would definitely make a lemon exfoliant. Get some epsom salt or sugar, put it in a bowl with lemon juice. Scrub away. I used to work at a spa and women would come in before big events with tans that they hated and we always suggested the lemon/exfoliation combo.
  • Loofa loofa loofa!

  • I work in a tanning salon and have both a Mystic booth and a Versaspa.

Mystic makes a product called Vanish...any Mystic retailer should carry it in either bottles or packettes...BUY IT!!! It is formulated to remove the DHA from your skin quickly.

Also...this is going to sound really weird, but Windex will also take it off. Spray the Windex onto a washcloth (or dump it on there) and start scrubbing away. It will fade it very quickly.

You could scrub with a loofah or exfoliant but it may come off unevenly, so be prepared for that. Most of the time a Mystic tan will only last 3-5 days so you don't have that long to wait it out!
  • PPs all have good ideas... I just wanted to say that your situation sucks! But you luckily have enough time to fix it before the 29th!

  • Loofas! And lemons! And hot showers! Good luck girl!
  • Thanks guys! My blotchiness on my face actually evened itself out on it's own. I was a little hesitant to use anything too strong on my face or to use the loofah since my skin is very sensitive. My hands and feet still look terrible no matter how much scrubbing I do. I didn't do all of the things you've all mentioned but may be trying some more later tonight when I get home from work.

I will say this... all of my students have told me I need to stay tan! They think I look "AWESOME"! lol... gotta love 6th graders!

Thanks again! I really do appreciate the advice. :-)

  • This may be too late, but I get spay tans done by a person and they are definitely way better. I accidentally got hydrogen peroxide(?)-the stuff in the brown bottle on my arm when I had a cut on my finger and it completely took off the tan!! So maybe that will help on some blothy areas.. Good luck!
