Any tips on getting my skin in shape?

I was lucky enough to have beautiful skin in high school--but unfortunatley, breakouts have hit me hard in my 20s. Does anyone have any tips for getting my skin in good shape for my wedding in June? I have tried facials (pro and at home), tea tree oil (helps somewhat), regular washing/moisturizing, and drinking lots of water... I just don't know what else to do. Help!

Re: Any tips on getting my skin in shape?

  • About 6 months ago, I switched to the oil cleansing method and it has greatly reduced my breakouts.  Here's the link for the blog where I got my first recipe.  I tweaked mine a bit and you may have to as well depending on your skin.  My teenage kids use it as well and it's been amazing for them, too.

  • It's a bit of an investment up-front, but getting the Clarisonic Mia is seriously the best thing I ever could have done for my skin. It's a standard $119 everywhere you go, but Ulta sometimes mails out coupons.
I've been using it since Christmas and it took about 4 weeks to see a difference but my skin looks 10x better. I don't break out NEAR as much and my pores are, like, gone.
You will see girls all over this board rave about it, and there's good reason.

I finally did a little digging on this since it isn't the first time someone's posted about it and I found this site that has 20% off everything so it wouldn't be quite so much for anyone interested in buying it:

  • Do you consume a lot of dairy?  I've found cutting out dairy has made an incredibly difference in my skin.

Another thing I use is natural cleanser I make myself.  It's lemon juice, water and baking soda.  It works very well.

What a great find! And I'm saddled with the plain white one??? I WANT TURQUOISE!!! :)
  • Adult acne is a different beast than teenage acne.  If you're using salyciclic acid, etc. cut it out- it could be making the problem worse.

A visit to the dermatologist got me on the right track.  after that point, it was just maintenance with less face washing and more moisturizing. (I only wash my face at night now, world of difference in skin!)

  • Thanks for all your tips! I can't wait to try them out :)
  • Clinique products are fabulous! I just bought the 5 step process for my wedding which is coming up soon and I can already see the results. Good luck! :)
  • I was getting fierce breakouts, until I cut back on caffeine (Diet Coke) and Sweet n Low. But the biggest change came from the Mary Kay Time Wise System.  Haven't had a breakout in months!
  • The best advice I could give you is go to a dermatogolist. I had moderate acne in high school, and it flared up after I graduated college. I tried Proactiv, changing my diet, changing my sleep habits, laundry detergents, etc.

Finally, I called the dermatogolist and made an appointment. She put me on an antibiotic regime for 8 weeks, along with topicals. At the end of 8 weeks, my flare up had subsided and now I am maintaining my skin with topical prescriptions. I have been almost breakout free for a year.

i know dermatologists can be pricey, but honestly, they are professionals and can tailor a program based on your individual needs :)

  • I am getting married in July and have been seeing a lady for facials regularly. I finally got the Clairson Mia and it is amazing. I love it and after only a week can tell I have no white  heads and i have had no new breakouts. I got a seperate head for my fiance to use and he is impressed too and loves to use it. He also has had no breakouts since using the Mia and said this morning the white heads around his nose are gone. Get this, its great!
  • Thanks for the link with the 20% off, I've been wanting one of these but didn't want to spend the money! Now it's under $100 with that coupon! =)
  • I found that cutting out acne medicine, or face washes specifically for acne made my skin a lot better.  Maybe you could try using Cetaphil?  I use lemon juice as my toner/acne treatment, taking lemon juice (fresh or from a bottle, it doesn't matter as long as it's pure lemon juice) and rub it on my skin after washing using a cotton ball, as it not only helps clear up acne (it fights bacteria), but it also helps to reduce acne scars and the pigmentation acne can leave behind. It can sting a little if you have cuts or "open" acne spots, and it can be diluted with water if it's too harsh for your skin. Best wishes!
  • I could not leave dairy out of my diet.

  • Have you tried Rodan and Fields Dermatologists products.? The Unblemish regimen works well on acne scars and acne. The Soothe regimen works on red , irritated and sensitive skin and the Reverse works for brown spots , dullness and sun damage.  Take a look at my Rodan and Fields site and click on to the "Solution Tools" .  The doctors will recommend a regimen for your skin type and problems after you answer some questions.  You can purchase what you need on- line and try it for 60 days.  If your not happy with the results you simply send back the used containers and get all your money back..What do you have to lose but your skin issues?  look at my site and contact me if youhave any questions..you will love these products!!   https://iLangman.myrandf.com
