Red lipstick for a redhead

I'd really love to wear a bold red lipstick for my wedding, but I'm having some trouble with what shade.  I'm not a porcelain skin, blue-eyed redhead.  My hair is more a light brown/red, I'm brown-eyed, warm skin tone though still fair and with freckles.  The girl at the MAC counter told me I should use blue-undertone red lipstick (their color Ruby Woo), but I think that might just be what they're told to say to redheads.  I think I might need more of a warm-undertone red lipstick, but I'm terrified of it looking orangey.  I've attached a pic.  Any thoughts?

I'd also love something long-lasting so I'm not re-applying every 15 minutes, but those tend to dry your lips and get crusty.  If anyone has a recommendation I'd love to hear it!

Re: Red lipstick for a redhead

  • My complexion is much like yours (darker red hair, hazel eyes) and I used Vincent Longo lip stain in Angel's Touch with some gloss over it. It's sort of orange-y, but in a flattering way. You could layer red gloss over it to get a darker tone (Buxom has some lip plumping glosses that are awesome). I loved it.

  • I would say go to a few makeup counters and see what kind of red they would reccomend. If they all reccomend blue undertone thats what I would go with. They're trained to give good advice for all hair colors and skin tones.

  • Just thought I would throw in my 2 cents as a redhead...
Have you tried Just for Redheads (www.justforredheads.com)? They have makeup/hair care products specifically designed for redheads!  I keep eyeing their micro-bubble lipstick in "Spice" which is almost an orangy brick red.  It is super pretty and their lipsticks last nearly all day!

  • Some good advice I heard while wedding makeup shopping was to actually color in your lips using lip liner and then use a gloss or lipstick over that.  I would really suggest going that route, particularly with red because it's so hard to keep red vibrant for a while, and the lip liner will keep the color.
