ACNE HALP! 75 days out from the big day!

Hi all,

So I was one of those "lucky" gals in high school who never had acne. Fast forward to college. Acne, acne, acne. Years later (I'm 25 now)...I've still got horrible acne (mostly "low" or "under the skin" kind of acne) mostly on my chin. I'm on birth control so that may have an effect and I eat a super healthy diet so I know it isn't that.

I've tried just about everything - tree oil, Philosophy acne kit, Proactiv, witch hazel, not washing, masks, etc. - but nothing works! HELP! What are some suggestions that perhaps I haven't tried? I've got 75 days before my wedding but I want to nip this problem in the bud before then!

Thanks for the help!

  • I know exactly what you’re going through. 28 now-never had a problem till about a year ago-tried EVERYTHING. And said that’s it im going to a doctor-I was upset, embarrassed, knew with the wedding coming up I did not want to have to deal with it. He prescribed medication, it’s a cream for your face, you use it night and day and it works!!! I am at work and cannot remember the name but I  will let you know! I know not all medications are the same for everyone but you could ask about it. I had the same, under the skin, and all around my chin and cheeks-it started working instantly and I haven’t had any breakouts since. I also use spectro gel-moisturizer- the Dr. recommended it and said the best thing for acne prone skin is actually moisture. My acne was worst in the winter because my face was so dried out. I also use a cleanser that I bought from the dr. office (again, cannot remember the name). I really think you should see a dr. I did the same thing you did and got recommendations from everyone and nothing worked. Good luck!!
  • The medication is called BenzaClin. The cleanser is called VivierSkin.

  • Go to the dermatologist. That is the only way to get the stuff that works, in my opinion. From antibiotics, to topicals, to facewash, there is so much out there that they can get you in touch with.

In my mid-30's, after never having serious acne before, I started getting periodic cystic-type acne--those painful under-the-skin "bumps" mostly on my chin.  I went to an esthetician for a glycolic peel and she treated my areas with a vitamin A serum.  It went away after that visit, and I never got it again.  I asked her about it years later, and she said it's not something you can buy in the store because you have to be licensed to use it.  All I know is, it worked.

So a dermatologist or an esthetician is probably your best bet.

I would see a dermatologist. Many times, there are oral antibiotics they can prescribe to help with acne. I took one in HS and it cleared up my skin wonderfully. There are also topical creams that are prescription-only that they can give you that you can't find in the drugstore. I wouldn't self-treat on this one and go to the doctor. That will be most effective.

  • See a derm.

Frequently people who get acne as an adult and did NOT as a teenager are actually breaking out because their skin is too DRY.  Acne fighting cleansers make the problem worse.

So make an appointment at the derm, and maybe switch to a cetaphyl and twice daily moisturizing routine until then.
  • Make an appointment with a dermatologist ASAP.

I went to my dermatologist and he prescribed me Retin-A gel.  I think the name is Tretinoin and it has completely cleared my skin.  My face has never been softer, but you have to use it every day.  I stopped because I ran out while I was visiting friends and didnt use it for 4 or 5 days and my face started breaking out again. Also I wash my face every morning and night with Cera Ve and I use the Cera Ve day lotion and night lotion.

  • I went to the dermotoligist and everything they gave me was harsh to my skin and made it so sensitive and red all of the time. I now swear by the clarsonic mia and murad clarifying cleanser. I'm 23 and my face was sooo terribly filled with acne. After 1 days I noticed a difference after a huge breakout day, then 3 days more and about 15 days into it I had no pimples...that has never happened to me.
