Help with lipstick allergy

I seem to be allergic to most kinds of lipstick and lip gloss, and I'm not sure what to do for wedding makeup. Generally I avoid wearing colored lip products, but I do want to wear something at my wedding (01/13/13).  I told my makeup artist during my trial about my allergy, and she used a gentle brand (not sure which one, maybe MAC), but I still had a horrible reaction the next day (swollen, weepy lips).

Any suggestions for what to do on my wedding day? Internet searches for hypoallergenic lipstick aren't helping. I know this sounds vain, but I want to be able to wear something, especially during pictures.

Thanks!

Re: Help with lipstick allergy

  • There isn't really such thing as a gentle brand - it's got to be a chemical or dye allergy.  I would suggest trying one of the organic/all-natural brands and see what happens (Lotus, for instance.)  Otherwise, if you want to wear lipstick again in your life, it might be worth getting allergy tests run.
    Good luck!

  • Can you make a home-made lipstain with kool-aid/crystal light and vaseline? What is it that you're allergic to in the lipstick? Are there any lip balms that you are able to use currently?

  • I can wear chapstick and anything without color, but lipsticks and glosses give me problems. The only thing I can wear is a tinted Carmex chapstick, but that won't give me very much coverage for photos. I can wear other types of makeup with no problem (eyeshadow, blush, etc).

I know at some point I should see a dermatologist about this, but with the wedding less than two weeks away I simply don't have time.

Can you melt some chapstick and mix it with some koolaid powder? Or use vaseline as a base? Maybe mix in some honey, bee's wax, olive oil, sunflower oi, coconut oil?

do you know what your allergy is? Can you drink artificially colored beverages? If you can, this may be more helpful.

    Look here: http://www.ehow.com/way_5744064_homemade-lip-stain-recipes.html

They have recipies for koolaid lipstain and all-natural lipstain.

Lipstain will last longer than lipstick and should withstand applying lipbalm over it. I suggest applying stain with a lip brush and NOT your fingers.

  • Thanks. I'll give the Kool Aide idea a try. I don't have a reaction with dyed beverages or food - just lip products.
  • I've heard putting "raw" koolaid powder on your lips can create a burining sensation- the acid-  so just be careful!

  • Have you looked at Arbonne? or Burts Bees? even Mary Kay. I'm allergic to lots of things and have been okay with these brands.
  • I'm allergic to a lot of lip products too and Revlon's lip butters works for me. Of course, allergies are super individual, but those are one of the few products I can wear.
  • There is something in these lipsticks that you are alergic to, but I take your not sure what ingredient.  Unfortunately, I don't think most make-up brands list there ingredients as by law they don't have to.  Maybe try a "vegan" brand.  I have recently went on a quest to use as natual of products as I possibly can, but not becuase of alergies.  I love "Tarte" although I do not know if they are vegan, they are free of parabens and other things-mentions it on their website- and I wear their "Lip Sergence" all the time.  Don't know if this would work for you?  Maybe go to Ulta or Sephora or somewhere like that and test one.  The hearing of "vegan" make-up is new to me, so I don't know of any brands.

I want a love like Johnny & June!
