Spray Tan

Ok so I am a big baby and I hate doing this for the first time without knowing what to expect.

So I will be getting a spray tan in a couple weeks as a trial for the wedding and so I look tan for my shower.

Anyone know what you do when you go there?! I've never even gone to a tanning bed so I am totally unfamilar with the idea.

Re: Spray Tan

  • I've never personally gotten a spray tan, but when i went tanning before my e-pics i saw some girl watch the video for it on what to do and listened to the lady that worked there explain what to do before actually getting it.

They tell you to use an exfoliate body wash to get off any dead skin, and not to use any lotion the day before you are going, and I think you have to wait a day or two to shower. No Jewelry or makeup when  you go either.

  • I've had a spray tan  before... I'm very pale and part Irish so its hard  to tan.
My first experience with a spray tan...didnt turn out so well I was real spotty I guess you could say...

The day before you go... exfoliate your skin by using exfoliating body wash. no lotion like the previous knottie said.
The day you go...don't wear make or jewelry.
After you get a spray tan...do not go outside for long period of times for at least a day because thats what messed me up.. but other than that...I love having spray tans!

  • Are you having someone spray you or is it a booth??  I don't reccomend the booths because I tend to streak.  I just had an airbrush tan where someone sprayed in on me, and it was great.  Either way, just make sure you put the lotion that they provide for you on all of your dry spots.  Especially knees, elbows, ankles heels, toes, knuclesand in between your fingers.  Otherwise it will get really dark in those areas.

  • I did the airbrush before and loved it.  Wear black loose clothes, not lotion or deodorant (thats what the salon told be you can turn blue so none for the 12hrs you need to wait before you can shower again). Strip down (i wore black strapless bra and undies but she said some women go topless) and she did a once over with an exfloiating glove, then applied the lotion on my hands, elbows etc and she went over the different ways I'd have to stand.  I was so nervous going in I almost canceled but so glad I did it.  I am not the thinest person either but was very comfortable and I felt like Malibu Barbie after!

  • I loved it! Exfoliate beforehand, it will come off weeks later and more at the same time than in blotches. Wear clothes you don't mind getting some color on. I did put lotion on dry spots, heels, toes, tops of feet, hands, back of hands before I went. Otherwise those areas can turn orange. I was very careful about the backs of my hands and top of feet. I didn't wear anything and felt totally fine, as soon as your done, step out and wipe your face off first, last thing I wanted was a darker face then body. Then wiped down everything else kind of fast to prevent streaks. Watch the video for sure! And pay attention! Bend everything!
  • If you are going to a really good technician, she or he should have already gone over everything in detail with you to prepare. I am glad this is just a trial. Don't worry though, it is a piece of cake. I go topless with undies and wear an old bathing suit coverup afterwards. I think everyone covered no deoderant or lotion. You can Youtube it for lots of tips from spray tan technicians. No worries. It will be good, and don't be modest. They see it all on a daily basis.
  • A spray tan is applied by a machine.  An airbrush tan is applied by a person.

If they have a tan accelerator at the place you go to, I highly recommend it.  I always use the tan accelerator before a spray tan and am never blotchy or streaky.  (You will have to purchase this.)

Use barrier cream (which will be provided) on your nails, palms, heels, knees and elbows.  This will help you not be too dark on the rougher parts of your body (and will protect your nails and palms).  Also do not wear perfume or deodorant like the PP have mentioned.
  • I just had a spray tan via booth for the first time ever for my bachelorette weekend since I've had no time to tan naturally or by beds.

The girl explained everything to me prior including the positions I needed to stand in the booth. The booth itself instructed me when to change positions. They should provide barrier cream that you put on your hands and elbows, kneeds...etc. She told me to put it on "thick" on my hands and especially around my nails, and I thought I did but rubbed it in. I think she meant even thicker.

When I got out, there was a huge mirror in the room and she instructed me to blot extra moistness with a rolled up towel (blotting was key as wiping would cause streaking). So, I could see immediately where things were uneven. You should not shower for at least 8 hours, and wear darker clothing when you go. It will be most even if you go with a fresh clean face and no lotion on your body.

It did NOT rub off the next day after a shower and I wore white. I also wore a white dress for my bachelorette night and was hot and sweaty and still not rubbing off.

I was overall pleased, although I think it is something that you get better at the more you do it (in regard to the barrier cream and blotting excess for even color). I personally intend to tan via high pressure beds (you cannot burn) before the wedding, but I was pleased enough with the spray to recommended it to my mom for the wedding who does not have a skin tone to be able to tan.

    Good luck!
