Fake nails - timeline

Hello! I bite my nails, and I am going to get acrylic or gel nails for my wedding day in late may.  I know they're not everyone's style, but I've had them done before, and I like the way they look when the tips are shorter, like so:

Now, for my question. I haven't had nails done in forever. How soon should I have them done? Would two days before be too risky? I'm contemplating on getting them the day of the wedding, just worried that it might be just another thing that adds to the stress factor...

Thanks for input!

  • Have you ever tried Shellac nails?  I absolutely love them and they last for 2-3 weeks with no chipping at all!

I had my nails done 2 days before the wedding, and since they were shellac, there was no chipping and looked as if I just had them done.  I wouldn't do it on your wedding day....too stressful like you said.

  • I had mine done 2 days before the wedding. If you are getting the French style, use a salon that uses white tips rather than painting a clear tip white. Without the white polish to chip, they will still look as good as they did when they were first done.

  • I had mine done the Wednesday before my Saturday wedding.  I get the ones called "pink and white" where it's a powder rather than polish so there is no risk of chipping.  White tips are a good alternative and cheaper as well.

The Shellac is great if you already have longer nails. If not I'd do it a few days before your wedding. Sometimes my nail tech accidentally cuts my cuticles and I end up with a tiny scab.

  • One or two days before sounds like the way to go - thank you so much for helping me settle this with myself (I am way too indecisive at times).

And I have tried shellac once - but it didn't really work very well for me - since I bite my nails (bad habit, I know), they're so short - and while it lasted longer than regular polish, I wasn't as blown away by the endurance as I was expectiong.

  • I think two days before is good. I got mine done the day before, but with Gelish, which is like Shellac.

For Shellac/Gelish, the technician makes the difference. The first time I got it done, it didn't last two weeks. Then I went to someone else and it lasted for three weeks.
  • Have you considered doing the GEL polish that OPI makes and growing your natural nails out?  Just a thought.
  • If I could grow them out, I would - to a degree, I've stopped biting my nails, but I still have a bad habit of picking at them, and they are really soft, so I've never been able to grown them longer than short.
  • That is one of my worst habits as well, I got my acrelics put on 4 days ago and they still look amazing, I did the ones with are pre-made with white tips, then the nail tech painted over all of it.  But anywho they look amazing and since they are hard as cement I can't bite them.
