Re: Veneers

  • Yes.  I got them put on when I was 16.  It is a long, expensive, and a bit painful experience (even with the novocaine).  What nobody told me at the time was that you have to get them replaced every decade or so.  Also, if you bite into something hard, such as an apple, reheated pizza crust, or bruschetta (from my experiences), you may accidentally pop off or chip a veneer.  Plus, as you get older, it is common for your gumline to recede and/or tooth to continue growing...so there is a gap between veneer and gums...and food gets stuck in it!  So annoying... If you don't absolutely need to have them made for estethic purposes, I would recommend avoiding it.  I regret the decision I made, although I do get compliments on my perfect smile.

  • Its almost like a catch 22. I have been highly considering lumineers or the CAD/CAM (sp?) but I just don't know.

  • I think that veneers are different than lumineers... I believe that veneers is where the tooth is filed down and then a veneer is bonded to the remaining tooth part, but lumineers bond over the tooth you already have.

I think it's best if you have a consultation with a dentist that specializes in this.

  • I actually just got veneers a month ago. I have mixed feelings. First, mine were not that expensive because my insurance covered most of it, which is very rare. My teeth had a lot of enamel erosion so the dentist took a picture and sent it to the insurance company. I got 6 on my top teeth. I had a very bad time at first bc my teeth were very sensitive from being grinded down and the temporary veneers I had fell off about 5 times while I was waiting for the permanent veneers to come in. Since the veneers have come in I love them. They look great and I feel better about my smile. I also got a customized mouth guard from the dentist bc I sometimes grind my teeth. Like I said I have mixed feelings, my teeth were not bad to begin with, but I did not like how they were different sizes and I had a small space between my 2nd and 3rd front teeth. Overall, I love the way they look, but if insurance didn't cover most of it I probably would have declined. One more thing, I went to a regular dentist not a cosmetic one, I live in Manhattan and cosmetic dentists are crazy expensive and  my insurance probably would have paid only 1/10 of what they charge.
  • My dentist quoted me $1,000 per tooth for veneers. I may do it sometime to repair the chips.
  • Caps are the ones that file teeth to a point then put a cover on.  Veneers are like false fingernails and are just applied over the teeth.  Lumineers are just a varitey of porcelain veneer.  I have 10 Lumineers and it was painless.  I had dental surgery to scale back my gum tissue because I had a gummy smile and that was NOT painless but you are not likely to require that.  The cost was, as mentioned, around $1000 per tooth.  I have had them for several years with no problems yet.  I am more careful with what I am willing to use my teeth for.  I definitely don't use them as tools any longer.  I LOVE them and feel 100% more confident now than before.  I used to hide my teeth and smile with my mouth closed.  Now I have a big happy smile.  Laughing
  • Ya, I'm definitely going to see a dentist about it. I really don't want to deal with pain and want to fix my smile before the wedding. I have a gap between my two front teeth and I'm self conscious about it and always have been. Its pretty much the only problem I have with my appearance, and something I have wanted to fix for years. I know it can get super expensive, but at this point it's one of those things I must do before the wedding.

  • I have had A LOT of dental work done, (knocked out my front tooth jumping over a fence and again while snowboarding,) and if you can avoid it then do. It is a long, painful, and costly ordeal.
After getting my braces off ,(yes my parents LOVED me for all the dental work. I'm sure there are a few in the dental profession around here that have bought a boat because of me,) a gap formed in between a few teeth a dentist suggested to fill it with enamel. My teeth are now even without gaps! and it costs MUCH less.
    Give that a try!

  • i've had them fill a gap with the same stuff they use to do cavities and, while it lasted a while, it did start becoming discolored and separating a little from the tooth.  i'm actually getting veneers on monday!  and yes, expensive.  about $1k / tooth.  i'll let you know next week how it goes!
  • Im in the dental profession, and as PP stated they can get quite pricey very quickly. First of all, I usu rec that when getting them for your top teeth on the front, go from smile corner to smile corner which can be anywhere from 4-8 (or more teeth) depending on how big your smile is naturally. The reason for this is, yes essentially the teeth are roughed up and these are like slip covers but they do add some variation in the thickness of your teeth. Also, as you age most people get some darkening of the teeth, this will prevent it from occurring unevenly. You can also keep a uniform shape to them as well. Some offices that have the CAD/CAM machine or some form of that equipment can even mill them that day so you dont have to have a temp. Other offices choose to not even do a temp since such a small amount of surface is removed. Once they are placed, a good biteguard for your dentist is a good route so you dont chip them in your sleep or while working out. Like PP said, you should feel confident in eating, but biting into apples etc can be a lil bit of a risk. I hope this helped!!
  • ok, so i got back from the dentist's office a few hours ago for my temporary veneers.....overall, i was happy with the experience - though i expect to be in more pain later today.

thoughts so far....while not the most comfortable experience, it wasn't really all that painful.  they numbed my gums / under lip area before injecting the novacaine and that helped.  they did have to re-up the novacaine a few times during the 3 hours i was in the chair, but all i did was say 'hey, it's hurting a little' and they shot me right up again.  so - as long as your dentist is good on giving you shots, it shouldn't be bad.

my temps are all one piece, and they fit pretty snugly - so i'm not sure they're going to come off.  she did give me some cement to use if they happen to come off while i'm traveling.  and she said to not bite into apples / hard breads, etc. while i've got the temps on --- and that it probably just wasn't the best idea in general.

my finals should be in about 3 weeks from now.  so i'll let you know how that goes!  so far, so good!
  • I looked into veneers. My front few teeth are a little crooked. My dentist also told me $1000 per tooth. I ended up getting Invisilign to straighten them out for good.
  • day 2 - and i'm not in much pain, honestly....they're just taking a little getting used to....
