Sugaring vs Waxing

I posted this question at the end of a thread when sugaring came up, but the thread had already died.

I've seen ads for sugaring when I looked up waxing and it claimed to only hurt the first time.  How does it work?  Do they have a sugaring equivalent of Brazilian Waxing?  Is it as effective as waxing?  How long does it last?  TIA!

Re: Sugaring vs Waxing

  • Sugaring is a type of waxing that removes hair the same way that wax does, but is gentler on the skin and slightly less painful.  I've used it to get a Brazilian before. In general, it hurts less and less each time you get a Brazilian because your hair is softer and finer each time you wax. I'm pretty sure there is no such thing as a painless Brazilian, no matter if it is waxing or sugaring. :-)

You do need to get a patch test prior to your appointment, to make sure you won't have any weird reaction to the sugar.

Brazilians usually last 3 weeks before you have to do it again. The last week you'll see some regrowth, but it has to regrow in a bit before you can wax it off again.

Here is Shobha's description on their sugaring treatment (they are a famous Brazilian waxing place in NYC). http://www.myshobha.com/myshobha/myshobha_pages/services.html

  • Whoops, my bad. I think that was my original post about sugaring, but I haven't gotten the hang of TK's system so I didn't realize anyone had replied after me.

Sugaring works basically the same as waxing without strips. They use a gob of what I swear looks like taffy (my girl says you can actually eat it) and they use it over and over. I guess that might be somewhat more hygienic since there's no issue with dipping the same stick in the wax. Supposedly it's easier on the skin because it only grabs onto hair and not any skin cells. She also says it's better at grabbing the nutrient sac at the base of the hair so it grows back weaker.

Amusingly, I went for a regular Brazilian today because my sugar lady is on vacation and her salon is really far away anyway and it's more expensive than waxing. The regular wax was much faster and less painful, but that might be a skill issue rather than the medium. My skin might be a titch angrier than with sugar, but I don't think I'll really know for a day or two.
  • sugar wax is edible (basic recipe is lemon jiuce, sugar and water) I find it easier to use than waxing at home, but have never had it done professionally. Have made my own sugaring wax but prefer to get the stuff brought in from UAE. Mims in a good brand, if you have any contacts.

Hard to get a reliable, affordable sugaring therapist in the UK, so, I generally wax.
  • I have had a Brazilian done with both styles. Sugaring took much longer (therefore longer time in pain) and ultimately wasn't as effective. I'm blonde so I have really fine hair which makes the sugaring style harder. I tried it once but I plan on waxing from now on. I got burns the first time I did waxing (which I blame on the technician) but it took about 10 minutes, versus the 40 minute sugaring session I endured. And with the sugaring it's much harder to do the full brazilian. It pretty much consisted of the whole frontside, no backside.

  • I would deifnitely go for waxing, though sources say sugaring can be less painful Ive tried it and it simply didnt last as long, not worth it for the price.

I had similar hair removal questions and everyone suggested European Wax Center i tried them out and it wasn't bad at all. Plus my first wax was free which was nice because I got to try them out and didnt feel like I had invested too much.

They use hard wax which is gentler than soft wax which requires the cloth strips, so if you're worried about pain I was surpised at how much less it hurt.

Not sure where you are in Colorado but they have a few spots. http://www.waxcenter.com/locations/CO/Open

Let me know if youg o would love a second opinion from a newbie!
