Banged my thumb nail now its blue/black help!

My wedding is two weeks away! My thumb got smashed at work at it a blueish black beginning at the cuticle to mid nail. Should i get acrylic to help cover it up or not? My nails are long enough to not have acrylic. Also, I'm using natural tones for my make up and bouquet, so I don't want a color too dark. What can I do to use a natural tone yet conceal the horrible color on my nail.. Please help!!!!!!!

Re: Banged my thumb nail now its blue/black help!

  • I banged my big toenail about a year ago and about halfway down it was completely BLUE!  I tried all sorts of different shades of color nail polish to cover it up...red, pink, etc, and nothing would cover it up!  Unless you wanna go with black (which I am thinking is a no hehe) then I would suggest some kind of cover up.

But I would talk to a salon to make sure that it is safe to cover up the bruised nail with acrylic.  The top few layers of my toenail eventually peeled off months later which makes me think acrylic could rip off some layers!  Also, the salon might have some suggestions for a cover up.

  • I would just leave it alone, actually. it's amazing how many of the little details that we stress about before the wedding, we don't even notice the day of, or don't make it into pictures. you can ask the photographer to avoid pictures of that hand.

  • I dropped something on my toe once, and after a couple of days (I don't remember how many days after considering it was probably about 10 years ago when this happened), my dad stuck it with a needle and let it bleed out...I think that made the color go away a lot faster than just leaving it.  However, he is a doctor, so I don't suggest doing this by yourself.  I don't know if this is something worth going to see a doctor about, but it might be something to consider!

  • In terms of regular nail polish, you could put a opaque polish in a medium pink or peach down as a first coat, then use a coat of pale pink/peach over that to lighten it a bit.

Polishes with a lot of shine/glimmer tend to be really opaque and might only take one layer, and you can find them in really natural shades.

You've got enough time to play with a few options and see what works.  Experiment on the good nails.  As a PP said, no one will notice but you.  The acrylic really isn't worth it.

  • Thank you for your suggestions. I will try everything!!!
  • When my finger got shut in a door my nail looked like that.  The doctor told me NOT to put any polish on it until all of the bruising had gone away (it has to grow out so it was a good 6 months) because it would increase the chances of an infection setting in.  Acrylic was defiantly off the table.

If you get a peach-based french manicure (instead of a pink), the yellow/orange tint in the  color will make the blue/purple from the bruise a little less noticeable. It will not disappear, but it will correct a littlle of that discoloration.
