AWFUL (foundation) makeup experience

I went to the Clinique counter today to try and buy a good foundation with a little more coverage than usual for the wedding. We tried (and removed) at least 6 colors on the two halves of my faces before the sales girl had a 'ureka' moment with a color that was supposedly light enough to match my neck, but not so light as to appear gray on parts of my face. I was satisfied with the look in the store and relieved to check foundation off the list. When I got into the car, I checked myself in the natural light. TERRIBLE color match. It looked like I had on a clay mask, and I could clearly see the skin/makeup color difference despite 'blending.' I'm sad. And my face hurts. And after consuming an hour of their time with my crazy skintone, I have to go back tomorrow and return what I bought (embarrassing, and even feels a bit rude). Anyone know of a brand (department or drugstore) for difficult to match skintones?

  • Don't be embarrassed, she should be embarrassed for not matching you correctly. I have an olive complexion that is very very fair and so its very difficult to match to my skintone - I've had several bad experiences. I hated clinique for what its worth, and it never matched my face.

I tried 3 foundations that I have found match my skin, 1. bare minerals, 2. urban decay's cream to powder 3. makeup forever HD. Hope that helps, don't give up hope :)

I have a skin tone that I'm not even sure anyone makes a color for! I'm very, very pale, a very literally definition of someone being white. Everything is always too dark on me. Of course now, trying to be "animal friendly" in my make up choices makes that about twice as difficult. I totally feel your pain. I wouldn't fell embarassed about the wrong match...it's totally her fault! Don't feel embarrassed^^ And always...ALWAYS try out foundation in natural light. It's actually best to put on your make up in natural lighting as well :)

Don't freak out too much either :) With only four weeks to go (says your ticker^^) you don't want to risk a super bad breakout, just relax and I promise you'll find something...there are SO many options out there :)
PS...If you are doing you're own make up for the wedding, remember to do it in as much natural lighting as possible :) And blend that foundation...being a photographer...the camera will pick up things like that...

  • Try MAC or Make Up Forever if you need fuller coverage. If you don't need full coverage, L'Oreal's True Match is pretty darn good. And muuuuuuch cheaper!

And don't be embarrassed to return your Clinique purchase! I've had to do it with Clinique concealer. (I bought Mary Kay's amazeballs concealer instead.)

Clinique is only one brand of the vast amounts of different places you can try. Im sorry you had a crappy time. I am VERY fair and I can honestly say I have never had any luck with Clnique foundations as far as color match I'd love the formula or that way it felt but never ever the color. I personally love love love bare minerals foundation been using it since 2004. Give it a try. If you have a Sephora near you they can try it on you and see if you like it

  • Bare escentuals is such a light powder I have found it blends really well! Good luck!

  • i'm fair and have never had luck with clinique.  they've actually told me that they can't match me before.

i've had good luck with MAC studio fix and some prescriptives - though it's been years since i've used prescriptives.

i'd hit up a sephora - they've got so much different stuff for you to try!
  • Clinique is the only makeup counter/store I've ever been to who told me they couldn't match me

I love MAC and Make Up Forever so give these 2 a go and return your Clinique

  • OP, not sure what your color is, but Laura Mercier foundation is a good color match for me. Most foundations are too pink for me, but when I asked a Sephora employee, she gave me a NARS foundation that was too yellow!

Definitely check in both indoor and outdoor lighting. I'm working with airbrush makeup right now. I looked great in the yellowish lighting of my bathroom, but it turned out the makeup was too pink in sunlight.
  • arbonne is amazing...has opti light technology in the formula that gives u an airbrushed look!
Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • Thanks so much! I'm feeling better now =)
I will definitely check out true match first since it has such a low cost and I really don't need to cover much (just a few freckles and sometimes pinkness) and maybe make an appointment at sephora. I appreciate your comments!
