Which side is the brides?

No, not which side her friends and family traditionally sit on. Of course that is the left. My question is which side should she be escorted to her groom on? Seeing most weddings, the bride is escorted to her groom on the left side of her father. I was taught that a lady should be on the right side when being escorted. She is on the right side when she and her groom face the audience and head back up the aisle. I will add that my father is left handed. Does this make a difference?

While it doesn't really matter, I'm curious as to the thoughts of those deeply steeped in tradition as to what is most appropriate?

Re: Which side is the brides?

  • I should have googled this, but I wanted to see if it was regional or what the difference is because I have heard both ways are fine. I just read that indoors a woman is escorted on the left and outdoors on the right. Basically, the gentleman should take the curb side so a woman didn't get wet if something splashed up at them. Good to know!

  • I read about the sword thing too. It's interesting to see the history behind why we do different traditions. Thanks, SM

  • I've always heard right because the FOB doesn't have to cross the couple to sit down. He'd already be on the left. It doesn't really matter though.
  • I was on my dad's left as he walked me up the aisle.  This is how it has been at most weddings I have been to (that I can remember).  I don't think it really matters.

I was on my dad's right hand side, marking the transition between my family unit being my parents transferring to being a new family unit with H. Again, no one is going to be like, "ugh, can you believe so and so walked down the aisle on the LEFT side of her father?!" (or RIGHT, whatever one you decide to do)... up to you :)

ETA: We also weren't really "strict" on brides side and grooms side of the church, so that might also affect your decision. We didn't follow tradition to a the tee.
