Maiden Name traditions

Hey there, question... What is ACTUALLY traditional, maiden name as middle name, or middle name and husbands last name? Just wondering.

Re: Maiden Name traditions

  • I would say middle name and husband's last name but it depends on the situation. I was not given a middle name at birth so I will use my maiden name as middle.
  • Depends on your culture.  In the US, and the UK, and many of the European traditions, because the woman became "property" of the husband, her last name was changed to his.  Hers just went away in most cases.   In some Latin cultures, though, the woman becomes "de HISLASTNAME" so, literally, the bride is "of" that family.  However, when I lived in San Diego, I discovered that a lot of the families had the woman's name as the child's last, and she didn't change her name.  I always thought that made more sense because you ALWAYS know who your mom is--dad is a little more questionable. LOL! In some families, however, there are other traditions.  I didn't change my name, and when my daughter was born 23 years ago, we hyphenated her last name with mine and her dad's, because my father had no sons and no brothers, and I wanted to pass the name on.  She is dropping both and taking her husband's last name, and plans on giving any children she has my last name as their middle name.

  • I've been wondering this same thing! My mom dropped her given middle name, and used her maiden name as her middle name. My sister did the same thing. I'm thinking about keeping my middle name and dropping my last name in favor of his. It has more to do with the flow of the names than an actual affinity for one over the other. I hear it's all personal preference, but I would like to know the "traditional" way to do it. • I am just dropping my last name and adding his.  I most likely will start using my first and middle as one name, because FSIL has the same first name.
  • I am kind of attached to my last name so I am going to do Me MyLastName HisLastName, I think.
