Giving away the bride

We were writing our own vows and going over them with the reverend and he mentioned to us what was "normal" for giving away the bride. He said that my father would walk me down the aisle, shake my fiance's hand, kiss me, and then 'hand me over.' Then he would sit back down. After he sat, he (the reverend) would go into the welcoming and THEN ask who gives the bride away. Then, from his chair, my father would say "I do". It seemed awkward to have him in his chair when being asked. We thought the reverend was suppose to ask when he was still standing. So possibility #1: he asks him immediately after handing me over, then he sits, then he goes into the welcoming? Or#2: should my father give me away, the reverend go into the welcoming while he's standing with us, then he asks him who gives away the bride? I'm sure it can be down however we want it; but we were just curious to what others have done, and what's "normal".

Re: Giving away the bride

  • When it's done (not very often, anymore) I've seen it the way the reverend described.  More couples are skipping this, or are using alternative wording, rather than "who gives this bride."
image Don't mess with the old dogs; age and treachery will always overcome youth and skill! BS and brilliance only come with age and experience.
  • That's the way we did it!
  • So when it is done, they normally don't ask "who gives away this bride" until after the father sits down?
