How old, should "something old" be?

there are no rules but I have always thought something old shoudl be older then the bride or groom

I just think of old meaning something you already have and didn't run out to buy for the wedding. I used my christening bonnet as a hankie.

I am using my grandmom's slip form her wedding. My mom and 4 of my aunts also wore the slip on their wedding days as well.
