Unity Candle question...

Just wondering who is supposed to light the other two candles, before me and my FI light the main candle. Does it really matter who does it? :)<3

Re: Unity Candle question...

  • My best friend got married in August.  Her mother & the groom's mother lit the 2 side candles.  Then when it was time for the unity candle, the bride & groom lit their matches from their respective family candles, then lit their unity candle.  I think it does matter who lights the side candles.  I think if it's not the mothers of the bride & groom, it needs to at least be family members.  That's the point of the unity candle.  Uniting 2 families.
  • I've always seen the MOB and MOG do it.  If they aren't around (or you don't like them) you could get anyone from either family, or just have it lit at the beginning.
  • We're having my Mom, FI's Step-Mom and FI's Grandma light the tapered candles. FI's Mom passed away when he was a teenager.

  • Thanks Ladies :) Yeah I was thinking I would have my mom and his mom do it. Sounds good to me <3
  • we are having the best man and maid of honor lighting the two candles. but normal the mothers do it
  • yea, usually the 2 mothers. If there are no mothers or one, I would choose someone else close like a grandparent, god mother, etc.
