engagement photos

I keep reading about engagement photos, and never really gave it much thought until this weekend when I met a photographer whose personality I just loved. So now I'm reading about e-pics and everything says you should use the photographer who will be doing your wedding so that you can get to know each other. The problem with that 1) is that we haven't chosen a photographer (our wedding isn't until 12-31-10) and 2) we don't live near where the wedding will be so I can almost guarantee the photographer I met would not be the one to do our wedding because we couldn't afford her travel expenses. Is it weird or bad call, or whatever, to use a different photographer for e-pics? I understand the reasons for using the same photographer for both, but are there reasons for NOT doing the pics with different people?Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Re: engagement photos

  • IMO, there is nothing wrong with having your epics done with another photographer that will not be doing your wedding. I know several people who have gone this route because they photog charged too much for epics. There is a plus side about getting your epics done by your wedding photog though.. you can see their work first hand and get a feel of how they will interact with you on the big day. Obviously there are tons and tons of couples who never have epics done but still have amazing wedding pictures. I say, if you want them now go for them and keep looking for your wedding photog.

  • You can do them however you want.  Most people choose to do e-pics because it is part of the package with their wedding photog.  I doubt that most people would do them if it were an added expense.  But if you have the budget, go for it.
  • honestly... My friend had her mom take theirs with a digi camera and they looked professional. Really when you think about it, when is the engagement photo used more than like once? It;s a waste of money in my opinion.

  • We used a different photographer for our e-pics than from our wedding photos, because we got married in Key West and the wedding package included the photography.  We hired an art school student to do our e-pics.  We were in Scottish Dress (He was in Kilt, and I was in 18th century dress with tartan) in an historic cemetery here in Atlanta.  We have those e-pics up all over our house, as we are really into my Scottish Heritage, and I'm Recording Secretary of my International Clan Society.   So that answers the question of if you use them more than once--why, yes, we do.  I even have one on my desk at work. Our wedding pics, such as the one in my siggy, are different, and we have those, too, but mostly in one album and one 8 x 10 hanging in our house.

  • I'm asking a close friend with tremendous photography skills to do our engagement photos, simply because I know it will be fun and we'd like to have them to look back on and also to use in our save-the-dates and invites. However, unless he is more practiced when our wedding time comes, we will hire a pro photographer for the day of. Those are pictures that we don't want to take chances with. Do what works for you, and what is important to you :)
