Name Changing - wanting 2 middle names

I thought I had figured this all out, but I think I may have been self-misinformed...

Does anyone know for CERTAIN that you can have TWO middle names on the marriage license and/or legally on driver's license/SS card/etc?

I finally decided that I wanted to keep all my names and also take my husband's to be last name so that i would have the same last name as him and our children.

So, I would be [first name] [middle name] [middle name] [husband's last name]. -- /> (ie. Samantha Mai-Lin Lee Jones.)

It seems  though that according to the San Diego County marriage reqs and The Name Equality Act of 2007 [gives specific rights to parties at the time they are applying for a California marriage license to choose and list on the marriage license the new name that each party will go by after marriage. Please refer to the
Name Equality Act.] I can't have two middle names without hyphenating them???!!!

I'm a little peeved because my middle name is already hypenated and I don't want two hypens in my middle name! I don't want to be (Samantha Mai-Lin-Lee Jones), I want TWO middle names! -- />

ANYONE KNOW OF HOW THIS WORKS???? THANK YOU!!!!

  • I would probably call the county office and ask them.

  • As people have told you on the two other boards you posted this on, call the County Clerk's office.
  • I have two middle names -- I've had two middle names for my entire life.  As far as I know, unless you're obtaining your marriage license from a very small town with a restrictive computer system, there should be no problem.

My social security card, my driver's licences, my passport, my tax returns, in other words, every official U.S. government document has accomodated two middle names with ease.  I don't see why it would be any different in San Diego than in DC.  Oh, and the same goes for banking records, ATM, debit and credit cards, etc.  All of these accomodate multiple middle names.

Why do you think/assume this is such a big deal??  My goodness, you'd probably go nuts if you were a Brit and had 3 or 4 middle names already.  Chill ...

This what I plan to do. I do not use my middle name (etc with my family) but all my friends call me by my first name. So I am going keep my last name but make it my middle. So my name will be my first name, my last name and his last name. When I say it out loud it sounds great. LOL.
