"I don't even know my own last name..."

I have a huge problem.

I hate my Fiancée’s last name. Honestly, he hates it as well. His parents combined last names and he was given a hyphenated last name, which he was teased about all through school. People still look at him/ us funny when it is said.
We talked about taking his last names and mine and scrambling the letters to see if we could come up with anything- no luck. Then we talked about checking our genealogy for a last name in common, but that stopped when my sister mentioned inbreeding… Then we talked about keeping separate last names. I am very not okay with this, I want our kids to share our last name. Finally Fiancée is thinking that he will just keep his mom’s last name because he is closer with her family than his dad’s.  I feel like I am being shallow, but I hate the name. All I can hear is children on the playground singing “Old McDonald” to our kids until they cry! Or asking if they get a discount on happy meals! Fiancée is pretty set on this… how do I cope? Can I convince him to go back to the genealogy thing, he had the last name Meyer and I had Mierjeweski (Polish family) and it could be shortened to Mier/Meyer. I don’t want to create a tension that will stay with us forever here…

This is exactly what I was thinking.

What about your mom's maiden name? Or his mom's maiden name?

I agree with him taking your name, if he's ok with it. I know people who have done that and it's worked out fine for them.

Or make up an entirely NEW name for you both? I've got friends who did that when they married.  Neither particularly  loved their own last names, and he was adopted, and was basically sort of like the male version of cinderella.  So they looked through the phone book and found a new last name they both liked.
