There are a lot of wedding reception traditions that I don't particularly care for. For instance, 100+ people watching my new husband go up my dress to retrieve a sweaty garter to fling to a group of men, made up of our relatives and friends' husbands. Awkward.
However, our caterer/planner said that people use things like the garter and bouquet tosses, wedding party speeches, father/daughter mother/son dances, etc, as cues to know what to do next and where to be. I agree that people expect cues, but feel like there has to be some other way to move the party along without the DJ announcing what to do next. Our reception is less formal, with various tapas and drink bars scattered throughout. The idea is to have people circulating, nibbling as they please, and just enjoying the party. Then the dancing starts. Then we eat cake and dance more. The rest I can do without.
Any ideas?
