Garter Toss: Bride says yes, groom says no

I am actually the groom, and feel rather uncomfortable with removing my bride's garter in front of all of our guests.  My bride is pretty determined that she wants this tradition.  We are definitely doing the bouquet toss, and she feels that guests will be "expecting" the garter toss afterwards.  She's of the attitude that adhering to traditions is important, and I tend to think that traditions are only important if you like them.  I just think that the garter removal is a fairly private affair, and I also wouldn't want anyone making an inappropriate remark toward my bride.

So what are your thoughts?  How would you convince her that we shouldn't do the garter toss?  Or, do you think I should "man up" and do it?  Obviously I've talked to her about how it makes me feel and she would not force me to do it, but I also don't want to take away her vision of our day.
