To Garter/Bouquet Toss, or not to garter/bouquet toss?

I will be 37 years old when I get married and it will be the first time for my fiance and myself.  Is it inappropriate at our age to go thru this tradition?

Re: To Garter/Bouquet Toss, or not to garter/bouquet toss?

  • I was 40 and this was my second wedding and my husband was 35 and it was his first.  I really didn't want to do it but he did so we did it.  He is very traditional and wanted to do all the traditional things at his wedding so I conceded.

So no, I don't think it's inappropriate due to age, although alot of girls on TK don't like the tradition for other reasons.  If you want to do it, go ahead.
  • If you and your FI want to do it, then do it. :) That said, we're skipping both of those traditions. I think they're awkward at best.

If you want to do it, do it.

But I think the tradition is very awkward for the couple & the guests. Plus, most guests appreciate it when it is skipped. But your age shouldn't be a factor.

  • We are doing the tosses, but not the part where the guy who catches the garter puts it on the girl who caught the bouquet. That, I feel like, is even more awkward, and has caused problems.

At a friend's wedding, this happened and the GF/date of the guy doing the honors on some random girl got pissed. He wasn't even obscene or tasteless about it (unless you find that part so in itself), but she still wasn't happy seeing her BF put his hands up another girl's dress. You might ask why he went out for the toss. In some areas, it's just truly single people, but at most weddings I have been to, it's anyone who is not married, so dating and engaged people participate.

We considered doing the anniversary dance, but I thought that might upset some people, mainly my grandma who lost her husband in a car crash 10 years ago.

  • We have two unmarried guests (over the age of 5) at our wedding - my sister and his dad.  Even if I didn't hate both traditions, it would be unspeakably inappropriate of us to do either.

  • First off, Stephie, you do look amazing!

Second, I don't think it's an age thing, more of what you want and what's expected in your social circle.  We're not doing either, just our preference.

  • I am 39 and he is 50 so most of our friends are married, that is why we decided not to do it, not because of our age. The only people I can think of who are not married are my three kids, and that would be very awkward for my 12yr old son to put a garter on his 17yr old sister :)

I don't think awkward covers it - that would be straight up shocking.  Good call on not doing it!
