Italian Wedding Theme

Is anyone else out there planning on having an Italian-themed wedding? My fiance and I both come from Italian families and we wanted to incorporate some Italian traditions into our wedding & reception. I've been googling it but want to see if anyone else out there has any cool new takes on Italian Wedding Traditions?

Thanks!!

Re: Italian Wedding Theme

  • I am half Italian. I wish my Grandma was still alive to do all that Italian stuff for me. I would see if you could get someone to bake pitsels (sp?) and other Italian cookies for you and use those as your favors, wrapped in bags or whatever or you could do all kinds of Italian sweet treats/goodies instead of the candy tables that seem to be so popular right now.

I would also try googling it. I also think under the culture board of TK, there is one for Italian weddings. That might help as well. Good luck.
  • hmm I'm 1/2 italian but I'm not sure i know any specific wedding traditions. I'm gonna ask my grandma this weekend and get back to you about this as I would like to know too! I do know your supposed to hang your garter on the virgin mary statue the night before the wedding and put it on the window and thats supposed to make it not rain. haha

The Tarantella is a standard Italian folk dance:

Jordan Almonds are traditional and given to guests in a Bomboniere:

The Wedding Story of Jordan Almonds

Wondering about Jordan Almonds, the ubiquitous wedding treat? These fancy, sugarcoated candies are rich in flavor and in cultural meaning, particularly at Italian, Greek, and Middle Eastern weddings. Whether decorative items, party favors, or simply nutty nibbles, here's a taste of these confections' yummy symbolism.
GENERAL SIGNIFICANCE Fresh almonds have a bittersweet taste, which represents life. The sugarcoating is added with the hope that the newlyweds' life will be more sweet than bitter.
ITALIAN WEDDINGS Five almonds signify five wishes for the bride and groom: health, wealth, happiness, fertility, and longevity. These almonds decorate each place setting as favors, tucked into pretty boxes or tulle bags called *bomboniere* that are often personalized with the couple's names and wedding date

    Hello,

I'm Italian and I live in Italy. Actually I think my fiancé and I will get married the same day as you will, that is September 25th. If you are planning on having an Italian-style wedding you can have a look at my post in the "Irish or Italian Traditions?" thread. I really hope it will help you!

Please note that regard to Italian weddings lots of traditions you may find while doing research on the Internet are not national but local.
  • Most places in Italy do the Jordan Almonds, but be careful with the Tarantella... I'm half Italian, but my fiance's family has many friends from Southern Italy. They all are insisting we do the Tarantella, but that's a southern Italian custom and I'm Northern Italian so we're not doing it.
  • In Italy we ALL use white sugared almonds for weddings, that is "confetti".

Regard to tarantella and other traditions I keep saying that lots of traditions you may hear of are local and not national (actually most of the times I've never heard of them). Our folklore is so different depending on the main parts (North, Central, Southern Italy), on the regions and on the areas you're referring to.
  • im gettin married on december 15th and im decorating tables with white roses and italian herbs, wine bottles, framed pics of italy, grapes, cheese, wine barrels, and intead of a desert table a GELATO table...
