I thought the monogram was brides first name  inital, grooms last name inital, and then grooms first name inital.

FMIL claims its groom and then bride. 

What is the proper and traditional way

I think that it's bride, last name of groom and then the groom.  I'll check though.

The bride’s initial goes first in a monogram. When the bride takes the groom’s last name, the order is: bride’s first initial, shared last initial (usually larger), groom’s first initial.

Traditionally since a wedding is thought of as the woman's day (lucky us!) Its brides first initial, shared last name initial, and then grooms first name initial.

I however like one of the PP's chose to do it his first initial and then our soon to be shared last initial and then my first initial because his name is shorter then mine so it looks better on everything to have his name come first. I also liked the way it looked better
