When do i start using my husbands last name?

Hi Everyone-
I was wondering when do I start using my husbands last name? We were just married on Saturday. Do I wait until the marriage license is filed, or after i change my social security card or do I start using it right away?

  • I agree with Aerin, it depends on where/how you're using it.  I'm sort of in limbo right now because I've changed my name on everything but my driver's license and my health insurance (the only thing I couldn't change without a new license) so I've been using my new name for basically everything.  But without a new DL/passport, flights would have to be booked in my name, and I had to make sure to use the name that matches my credit cards when making purchases while I was still transitioning.  Almost all official changes will require your marriage license, though.

  • We were married on Sat and I picked up our marriage license on Friday.  It took less than 10 min at the Social Security office to apply for my new card, moved down the road to the DMV and spent about 20min getting my new drivers license.  WV only required my old DL, the certified copy of the marriage cert & 1 more proof of residence ( I used my voters registration card) After that I stopped by the bank & change my name on our accounts.
Other stuff like my RN license I had to mail in an actual certified copy of our marriage license to change my name.  I can't change my name at work until I have my new license in hand.
The rest has been easy, just mosly a phone to change.

  • Socially, I started using my married last name right away. But as far as signing the slip when using a cc/debit card, I waited until I had my new cards and/or my ss card, whichever came first in the mail.
