Who plans the bridal shower?

I'd like to give my mom something to plan on her own but I've heard that the MOH plans the bridal shower. Is there a hard & fast rule about this?

Re: Who plans the bridal shower?

  • I think traditionally the MOH plans a wedding shower.  I have had some friends that have had 2 wedding showers, 1 for closer friends thrown by the MOH and 1 for family thrown by their mom and/or FMIL.

I am only having one small shower and it is actually being thrown by my FH's aunt.  MOH is my FSIL and she is hosting our reception at her home instead of her hosting the shower.

  • Anyone who chooses to can plan a shower.  However, this isn't something you ask for.  It's something someone will offer to do if they want to.

If your mom offers to throw you a shower, it's fine.  But it would be inappropriate to ask for one.
  • I dont know how true this is, but I heard that family isnt suppose to plan the showers because it looks like a gift grab or soemthing. I dont really know though.

My FI's family friends are throwing mine and my bridesmaids are throwing me a bachelorette.

Maybe your mom could help you host a bridesmaid luncheon the day before your wedding??

  • The ladies at our church always throw a shower for the couple and the whole congregation is invited.  We go to a small church (under 100 people).  That will be our only shower.

To answer your question OP, my personal opinion is to stay away from having the Mother of the Bride throw a shower.  That more than anything seems really 'gift grabby', like hsunij said.  I don't think there is anything wrong with a MOH wanting to plan you a shower, but you can't ask her for one.

There are so many things that must be done to prepare for the wedding, so I'm sure there's something else your mother can plan.  I would just stay away from having her plan anything that is all about gifts (ie, a shower).  What about having her plan a bridesmaids tea for the day before the wedding?
  • Anyone can throw one. Traditionally it is the MOH, but doesn't have to be. A really good friend of the family is throwing mine with the help of my FMIL and Grandma. I can't go home for more than one (what they orginally were gonna do bc we live 10 hrs away from our hometown) so I am just having one big one. My sister is still in school and is crazy with hw, so she is helping as well, but not doing the bulk of the planning, etc
