Appropriate substitute for sixpence?

I ordered a sixpense from Amazon - but it's dated the birth year of my ex-H. I don't want it now. I was sorting through some things this evening, and found an assortment of older couns. Would I be able to substitute a Liberty Dime? I have three of those! I guess technically they are Mercury Dimes...

  • No one really does the six pence anymore so it's ok to skip it.

  • I really would like to follow this tradition, this time. Thank you for the reassurance either way!

I guess I'll go to WC and see if anyone wants my sixpence

  • Get one off of Ebay!  Mine was $2 (shipping included) and you know the year ahead of time. ;)
  • I get not wanting to have any memory/sign of your ex, so in this case the date DOES matter. Just that it needs to be ANY year but that!

H and I got one for DD with HIS birth year since he will be giving it to her. (She was born after 1967 so her year of birth was not possible.) We got it on eBay and it was about $3 shipped. It took about a week to arrive. Actually we got two of them because we have a younger daughter and want one for if she ever marries.

It is a very old tradition and not done as commonly as it once was, but it is actually part of the old rhyme,'Something old, Something new, Something borrowed, Something blue and a silver sixpence for her shoe.' Although, sixpence weren't made from actual silver for very long, so sometimes it's phrased as 'Lucky sixpence for her shoe' instead.

  • Mine is a twenty pence piece instead of six. My sister brought it home with her from London and it's from the year FI was born.

  • Our photographer gave me a penny for my shoe with the year of the marriage on it.
  • Definitely try ebay.  My father has passed away, so I got one from the year he was born for about $3.  Not a lot of people do it anymore, but it is a nice tradition to do if you can.
