Irish Wedding Customs

I went to Ireland on vacation last year and there was a wedding at the hotel we were staying at. Our tour group was invited to the reception. I went down to look, and noticed that all the women were wear hats. I asked about it and was told that it's an Irish tradition that the woman from the bridal family wear hats. I have been trying to find more customs online, since we're having an Irish wedding. I can only find the older ones of not getting married on saturday and no wearing green but nothing of the hats. Anyone out there have any information that I could use? Thanks!!

Re: Irish Wedding Customs

  • Are you really in Pittsburgh (PA)? There is a shop in Station Square called St. Brendan's Crossing and they have a couple books there that go into more detail about some traditions.  I bought one that was about $4 or $5 called "Creating a Celtic Wedding" and I'm pretty sure they had a bigger book with lots more info.  I have also did some internet research finding some Irish customs.  But the ladies at SBC are really nice, and they have great stuff.  I actually found a wedding band there that fits my engagement ring (which was my grandmother's) perfect. We'd been searching high and low for a band and we couldn't believe when we saw it!

  • No, I'm about 90 minutes away. Close enough :) Thanks!
  • My family is Irish but my fiance's family is not, so I didn't want to go over the top.  We're just having Irish music incorporated in to the ceremony.  It is simple, but there will be a little glimpse of Irish tradition in there.
Happily married since September 2010. :)
  • there are things like taking a horseshoe with you down the aisle, breaking bread over your head... I just googled

  • My cousin incorporated many Irish customs into her wedding but the most noticeable was the bagpiper who walked down the aisle playing the bagpipe.
