Who is supposed to make wedding toasts?

I know the Best Man is supposed to start off but beyond that I'm clueless.

I imagine that the MOH is supposed to as well but mine has serious stage fright and I'm afraid she won't want to. :(

Also, what about the parents? Is there a particular parent from each side that is supposed to make a speech or after the BM and MOH is it just whomever you want to?

Re: Who is supposed to make wedding toasts?

  • Traditionally, the BM does.  But, he doesn't have to, and you reallly shouldn't ask anyone to give one.  That's something they should tell you that they want to do.

Sometimes the MOH gives one.  Sometimes the parents give them.  Sometimes siblings will.  If people want to give toasts, they'll let you know.
  • Tradiationally, the BM makes a speech. After that, more often now the brides want their MOH to do a speech as well. At my FIL's wedding, they pretty much had an "open mic" for 15 minutes & allowed anyone who wanted to give a toast come up & talk. I think anymore it can be anyone who means a lot to you.

  • I am assuming just the BM will make a speech. I mean, if my dad wants to say something, or someone else does, fine, but I really don't want to sit through all that, so I'm sure no one else does. I want the party to get started and keep rolling.
