Hand-Tying Ceremony

My parents, grandparents, cousins and everyone had a hand-tying as a part of an African American ceremony. It's a long string of cochre type sea shells that the priest used to bind our hands and it signified a bond and unity.

Our officiant said he would look into it and got back to me asking if I understood it was a part of a witchcraft ceremony...I wasn't aware.

My mother said it wasn't as did most of my relatives, but now I'm just confused...does anybody know about this?

Handfasting is indeed an originally pagan tradition, if that's what you're referring to.

I hope it isn't...I was trying to keep it traditional but now I'm thinking of leaving it out.

It sounds very similar to a pagan tradition seen in a lot of Irish/Celtic weddings. But if its part of your family traditions, I say include it.

I agree with pp. Since its a family tradition, I think you should still include it in your ceremony.

Handfasting was done because it had symbolic significance; people didn't wear wedding rings. It was a way to embody the commitment between the bride and groom. It does not mean that if you choose a handfasting, you are honoring pagan gods or practicing witchcraft. It's a great family tradition, so honor it!
