Unity Candle Explanation

I am looking for a well written and brief explanation of the symbolism unity candle. 

We are having a unity candle and jumping the broom.  Most of our guest won't be familiar with with jumping the broom so I thought I should just put an explanation of both traditions in the program.

The minister isn't going to give an explanation because we will be singing a hymn at the time.
