Whose doing these Traditions?

1. Something Old, New, Borrowed, and Blue (and Sixpense in your Shoe). I am doing all of them except the Sixpense. My something and borrowed is my Grandmother's Ring. My something new is my dress. My something blue is a Bridal Hankerchief. It has blue flowers. :)

2. Groom cannot see you until you are walking down the aisle.
He has seen me in my dress. I was having a "fat day" and he helped me get into it... making sure it still fit. He is in no way superstitious. We plan to do a first look photo shoot, and I still think he will be surprised. He hasn't seen me all dolled up since Senior prom, and well this will be different.

3. Father gives you away.
My father isn't a part of my life, and I plan to have my Mother give me away. I also plan to dance with her at the wedding!

4. Bouquet & Garter Toss
Yes... I think that they are fun traditions, but the ladies get dangerous with the bouquet toss... they mean business! lol

5. Smashing Cake in each others faces.
NO! I will have to have a talk with him (he is scandelous... and he might think it is cute... NO THANKS!)

6. Dollar Dance.
I know that it is on the fence on TK, but it seems to be tradition in my circle, and we plan to do this :)

Did I forget something? Do you have a tradition that your family does? I would love to hear them!

  • I did something old/new/borrowed/blue and my dad escorted me down the aisle, though the question was "who blesses and supports this marriage?" and my dad answered "their parents do."  We didn't do any of the others.
  • 1. Something Old, New, Borrowed, and Blue (and Sixpense in your Shoe).
I will do all apart from the sixpence, I had actually never heard of that part of it before now...new will be the dress, I don't know about the others just yet!

    2. Groom cannot see you until you are walking down the aisle.
I will definitely try and stick to this one!!

    3. Father gives you away.
I would like my mum and dad to both walk me down the aisle, I don't really feel like I'm being "given away" in the literal sense!

    4. Bouquet & Garter Toss
I think we'll definitely do the bouquet toss, not sure about the garter...maybe.

    5. Smashing Cake in each others faces.

    No cake smashing for us!!!!!!!!!!

    6. Dollar Dance.
    Nope.

  • 1. Something Old, New, Borrowed, and Blue (and Sixpense in your Shoe).
I'd like to do this. I only have the new, so we'll see if I can get it all together.

    2. Groom cannot see you until you are walking down the aisle.
We're going to do the first look and as many pictures as possible before the wedding. The ceremony and reception will be at the same place, so I don't want people to be waiting a long time for us to finish pictures.

    3. Father gives you away.
My dad passed away in January. My mom will be walking me down the aisle.

    4. Bouquet & Garter Toss
We aren't doing either of these, but mostly because we really don't have many single people attending. I may wear still wear a garter to get my something blue in.

    5. Smashing Cake in each others faces.
Absolutely not. Our cake is chocolate. If I got that on my dress I would be SO angry.

    6. Dollar Dance.

    Definitely not.
  • 1. Something Old, New, Borrowed, and Blue (and Sixpense in your Shoe).
I will do all of it except the sixpense. New is dress and blue will be in my bouquet. Still thinking about the others but my BFF/one of my MOH suggested using my grandfathers wedding ring as something borrowed (he passed a few years ago but grandma wears it on a chain most days). I cried at this idea and I love it. I'm not sure about the something old yet.

    2. Groom cannot see you until you are walking down the aisle.
We're doing this one but not because we're superstitious. We just want the first time of him seeing me in my dress (or the dress for the matter) to be when I walk down the aisle.

    3. Father gives you away.
He will be walking me down the aisle and the pastor will ask "Who gives this woman to this man"...whether he answers "I do" or "Her mother and I" is up to him. I don't mind either way. I think people look too much into this tradition.

    4. Bouquet & Garter Toss
    Both...I think they're fun!

    5. Smashing Cake in each others faces.

Yes, but I've already warned him about getting any cake down my dress. That will not happen!

    6. Dollar Dance.
    Nope.
  • 1. Something Old, New, Borrowed, and Blue (and Sixpense in your Shoe). I did all of these except for the six pence in my shoe. My something old were my earrings, new was my dress and shoes, borrowed was my nana's pin that we pinned to the stem of my bouquet and my something blue were my new married initials at the bottom of my shoes.

    2. Groom cannot see you until you are walking down the aisle.
Nope.. we did a first look and are so glad we did. It was so nice to be able to show our true emotions.. hug, kiss, cry, and get a good look at each other. And I still had a super emotional walk down the aisle and the look on DH's face was priceless. Oh! And we got our pictures out of the way so we could mingle at cocktail hour and enjoy the party we had planned for a year and a half and spend more time with our guests.

    3. Father gives you away.
Yes, my dad walked me down the aisle.

    4. Bouquet & Garter Toss
Yes, I've never been to a wedding without these done. They've always been fun in my circle and we had a bunch of people who were able to go up for both so no one was singled out. Our friend who caught the garter was really funny putting in on my SIL who caught the bouquet.

    5. Smashing Cake in each others faces.
NO! Definitely not! We fed each other cake with our fingers, but no smashing.

    6. Dollar Dance.
This was never a question, aside from it being extremely tacky, no one in our circle does this or ever would.

  • i did #1.  that's it.
  • 1. Something Old, New, Borrowed, and Blue (and Sixpense in your Shoe).
I did the sixpence thing at my first marriage as I had a guest from England who brought me one.  Many people also use a 50cent  piece.  I will have a 50cent piece somewhere on my person (person reasons)
#1 - old - my jewelry - using a set of pearl earrings I've had for a long time
    #2 - New - dress
    #3 - borrowed - hair piece
#4 - blue - a blue fish brooch pinned inside my dress (we met on plentyoffish.com)

    2. Groom cannot see you until you are walking down the aisle.
Yep - he wants it that way.

    3. Father gives you away.
My Father passed away 12 years ago.  I will be 40 when I marry, and will walk myself down the aisle.

    4. Bouquet & Garter Toss
    Yes.

    5. Smashing Cake in each others faces.
I don't want to!  He does!  I saw a video where the bride & groom by passed each other and got the Maid of Honor and Best man!  My fiance is a full foot taller than me (5'6" to his 6'6" ) so his arms are way longer.  I just hope he is nice.

    6. Dollar Dance.
We will do this - flame away - but it is tradition where I live and I have never been to a wedding that hasn't done it.
  • 1. Something Old, New, Borrowed, and Blue (and Sixpense in your Shoe).
Yes.  My something old/borrowed is my grandmother's brooch that everyone in my family has worn  in their weddings since my grandma got it in the 40's.  Something new is my dress and something blue will probably be my undies.

    2. Groom cannot see you until you are walking down the aisle.
Yes.  I'm not superstitious about it, but I just like the tradition.

    3. Father gives you away.
My dad will walk me down the aisle, but not "give me away".  We'll have to work with our officiant on something else to say....

    4. Bouquet & Garter Toss
Nope...I always hated participating in them when I was single and we aren't going to have a lot of single people at our wedding which makes it even more awkward for everyone.

    5. Smashing Cake in each others faces.
Hell no!  I've already told FI that if he smashes cake in my face, he's in for a very long HM with no sex.  Although we are looking into having cheesecake for us (I don't like cake) and that has to be served with a fork anyways...which would cause major injury if he shoved that in my face.

    6. Dollar Dance.
It's very common in my circle, but I don't like the idea of dancing with everyone, so we aren't going to do one.

Forgot about the sixpence... i prob won't do that though since my shoes are peep toes so it'd prob fall out =D My dress is both old and new. I have a blue bow on my panties. and i'm probably going to borrow earrings from my FSIL.

    2. Groom cannot see you until you are walking down the aisle.
yep, def sticking with this one. both FI and i are super traditional.

    3. Father gives you away.  No.  This was my second marriage and also my dad and I had some major disagreements when I got engaged so I walked down alone.

    4. Bouquet & Garter Toss.  Yes.  I didn't want to do them but DH did so I figured what the heck.

    5. Smashing Cake in each others faces.  Never.  I would hope no one would ever do this.

    6. Dollar Dance.  No.  I've never seen one done at a wedding.

    Yes, except the sixpence.

    2. Groom cannot see you until you are walking down the aisle.
We did a first look and loved it!

    3. Father gives you away.
No...but our parents walked with each of us down the aisle and then the minister asked both of our parents (and then everyone present) if they supported the marriage.

    4. Bouquet & Garter Toss
No...we did an anniversary dance.  We only had a handful of singles at the wedding and many couples that have been married for years that provide great examples for us to follow - we wanted to honor all of them.

  • 1. Something Old, New, Borrowed, and Blue (and Sixpense in your Shoe).   Trying to! Old = handkerchief my grandma made me when I was born. New = dress, veil, etc. Borrowed = maybe my mom's wedding ring or something from my other grandma. Blue = decals on shoes, details on garter, and details on panties. Sixpence = I think it would fall out!

    2. Groom cannot see you until you are walking down the aisle.
We're doing a first look. We want to spend as much time with our guests as possible, and it will still be special to us!

    3. Father gives you away.  Yes.

    4. Bouquet & Garter Toss.  No. Too few single women left in our circle, and the idea that he would stick his hand up my dress in front of my father, uncles, and grandmas makes me cringe.

    5. Smashing Cake in each others faces.  No way! He knows better.

    6. Dollar Dance.  No.  I've seen it done, but it always feels forced and/or tacky.

old = my watch that my fiance gave me our first christmas,
new = my dress, veil, shoes, etc,
blue = garter, stones under my shoes,
borrowed = undecided, sixpence = probably

    2. Groom cannot see you until you are walking down the aisle.
    yup

    3. Father gives you away.
    yes.

    4. Bouquet & Garter Toss.
    yes bouquet, garter undecided

    5. Smashing Cake in each others faces.  Nope

    6. Dollar Dance.
Not a dollar dance, but in my culture guests usually "spray"
the couple with money while they dance.
  • 1. Something Old, New, Borrowed, and Blue (and Sixpense in your Shoe).
Nope, really didn't care much to.

    2. Groom cannot see you until you are walking down the aisle.
Yes. This was a really big deal to him, so I stayed with my mom the night before. I'll admit, it really was nice to do.

    3. Father gives you away.
My step-dad (Who I do consider my "real dad") escorted me down the aisle. We didn't do the whole "Who gives this woman" thing, though.

    4. Bouquet & Garter Toss
No, I honestly can't stand them, and nobody ever misses it if you skip them anyway. They're actually starting to die out entirely in my circle-the last  6 weddings I went to didn't have them.

    5. Smashing Cake in each others faces.
Oh, hell no! I spent a ton of time and money to look absolutely perfect that day, and I had no desire to ruin it with getting frosting everywhere. Plus, I've had cake smashed in my face before-it took me like 45 minutes to get all of the frosting out of my hair and nose, I really didn't feel like spending the last hour of my wedding trying to clean myself up. I actually even told my husband if he did it to me, we wouldn't be consummating the marriage, lol.

    6. Dollar Dance.

Again: hell no! In my area, it's considered incredibly rude and tasteless (Usually boxed gifts are given at the shower, and then everybody gives a cash gift at the wedding-so guests have already opened their wallets enough at that point). I've only been to one wedding that ever had one, and while it was even going on, the guests were talking smack about it. Because, again, it's just not done here.

*I felt sorry for my husband before I met him. Take a number.*

You could probably get one from amazon or something, but usually I think it's handed down.  You could probably use a five pense which I think is in circulation now.

    I am adding three
    German traditions to my wedding:
    - sawing a log after the ceremony (to symbolize the first diffcult task as a couple)
It looks SO FUN and their is a roof atrium at our venue I am hoping we can do it... because outside the Church on Fifth avenue will probably NOT be allowed.

    - German tosting glass
It is made so the Bride and Groom can drink out of it at the same time after the toast.

    - Newspaper with articles about the couple to sell at the reception (My older sister makes professional newspapers/flyers).
