Printing my own invites... need printer recommendations...

Hello Ladies!
So I've decided it would be wiser to use the cash I would spend on having my invites done professionally and put it toward a printer (which I Need anway).  However, I haven't got the first clue where to begin researching printers and how to figure out which ones work well to print invites...

Now I'm certain I'm on the right board to find out this answer.  Thanks in advance my fellow DIY Brides!!  :)

  • I can't give any brand suggestions, but my FI owns his own computer sales and service business, so here's what I can tell you:

If you are doing it at home, laser is the best. It won't run if it gets wet, and it looks far crisper.

Also, you may want to head to a place like Walmart or Meijer and check out their photo printing area. You can do all kinds of things there. It may be cheaper, it may not, but it's a suggestion.

Also, go with a 12-14 point paper. 10 is just too flimly and looks cheap.

Hope this helps! Best of luck!

  • Laser is the more economical way to go. I have a Samsung ML 2010 that I got a few years ago, and I've only had to replace the toner once. Keep in mind that the toner costs $70 or so though... but that would be the equivalent of 2 sets of ink cartridges in color inkjet printers.

However, the color laserjets are really expensive. If you want to print your own and save yourself some money but you want color, then try 123print.com or vistaprint.com. You can get really good deals there and not be limited to black and white.

Basically, you can get whatever printer you want, and they should all work with the invite kits you can get from office supply or craft stores. The important thing to look at is how many invites are you printing, and how much ink is that going to take. If you are only doing about 30 invites, that's easy enough to do with an inkjet printer. If you are doing more than that, I highly advice the laserjet.

  • KRHagen is right.  I had this question a few months ago and when I searched previous posts, it some model of the Canon Pixma was the common response.  I bought one (maybe the Pixma 560) a month or so ago and love it!  I got all of my invites printed and will do the enclosures and RSVPs soon.  Super easy and they look great!

.. now if someone could just tell me how to get this Knot TV junk off the top half of my screen I'd be a happy camper!!  :)

  • yeah, I find that annoying too. I just collapse it and pause it. It's a pain when you're opening multiple tabs, though.

    Good Luck!

  • Oh, sorry! I was going to add the companies Uprinting and Gotprint to check out too.

Word of caution with Gotprint: They will print like 5-10% extra because there will be tons of misprints and you will have to go through them all and sort the good from the bad. But, I think they are one of the cheapest.

  • I have a desktop hp ink jet which I also used for my friend's wedding invites.  It works really well.
