Father/daughter dance

i'm having a really hard time figuring out my song for this dance, mostly b/c i don't want anything cheesy, or even worse, romantic! (some of the songs i've seen suggested in the magazines are downright inappropriate lol). the relationship i have with my father is lighthearted and non-mushy. i do want a slow song, and i want something traditional, but i'm at a loss here. any suggestions? Thanks :)

  • We are doing the father/daughter and mother/groom dance at the same time to Louis Armstrong "what a wonderful world." I double-checked the lyrics!

My father and I have a great relationship and pretty non-mushy too.  He tells me he loves me and is proud of me, but I was never a Daddy's girl that would cuddle with him or anything.

I let him pick the song, which was fun for him.  You might want to consider asking your father if he wants to choose.

My father would play 'Brown-Eyed Girl' for me a lot when I was a toddler and we would dance to it, so I thought he would choose that.

But he actually chose a very cool, albeit little known song called 'My Daughter's Wedding Day' by Authur Godfrey.  His voice is unusual, but it's a good song.
  • thanks guys, i'll check those out
  • If your parents are still married, check out Jimmy Buffett's "Magic Princess."
    Wait, that's not really slow.
  • "little miss magic" by buffett is probably what we'll do ... FI and I are big buffett fans, spent a lot of time with the top down on the car and I've held every relationship I've had to my parent's wonderful one ... so it's sort of perfect for who we are.

[QUOTE]I think this song definitely walks the downright innappropriate line, but I've heard it at tons of weddings.

Oooh, yes. No way would I dance with my dad to a song that talks about "making love in the green grass behind the stadium with you, my brown-eyed girl."

    Just -- no.

That's what I used too! My dad couldn't make a decision so I went with a classic.
  • I'm letting my father pick, so I don't know what we are dancing to yet.  I thought it would be nice for him to pick, and it's one last thing I have to worry about or decided on.

  • same situation and my fall back song is Still Fighting It by Ben Folds.  It is actually about a son, but he only says it a few times and it could be misconstrued as "sun" which would be fine. If people can get away with songs about making love, this shouldn't be a big deal haha!  It's a song about growing up and relationships changing.  I love it because it talks about getting fast food and maybe beers in the future, and, to top it off, it starts out " i am a bird in a brown polyester shirt".. my dad's a ups man and it makes me smile every time.  It is a bit long, though, so if he shoots it down I will try out You Are My Sunshine by Johnny Cash.

I've got a paylist started with ideas here:

  • It's long been my dream to do my father/daughter dance to the Rainbow Connection by Kermit the Frog

I think it's basically adorable. Wistful, touching, and guaranteed to make SOMEONE cry.  lol
  • I had the same problem, you might look at Sweet Child O Mine by Sheryl Crow.  Make sure you listen to the origional because the concert versions are too fast for a slow dance.  It's not super sappy or inappropriate and it's kinda funny that it's a cover on the Guns N Roses song.
  • We're both big Eagle fans. We're going with Taking You Home by Don Henley. It's the song he wrote when his daughter was born.
